Homebrew Canus Species Details

Canus are derived from lycanthropes that favored life while shaped as a werewolf. Over time, the werewolf lost lycanthropy and remained in canine form yet its heritage as other species prior to lycanthropy drove a new evolutionary change to, as a werewolf, assume controlled temperament. Over time, the Canus species evolved into the sentient anthropomorphized canine you see today - with backgrounds varied over many medium or large canine races. The species counts as humanoid.

Canus Traits

As a canus, you have the following racial traits.

Keen Hearing and Smell.

The Canus has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid.

Size

You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you select this race.

Speed

Your walking speed is 35 ft., and you have burrowing and swimming speed of 5 ft.

Leader of the Pack

Bonus Action: The thrill of the chase and fight surge in you and you release a savage growl or inspiring howl. Howling will encourage up to three creatures of your choice within range. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw. You may use this once per short rest. Growling will cause each creature in a 40-foot radius to succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or drop whatever it is holding and become frightened (except those immune to fear). While frightened by this growl, the creature must take the Dash action and move away from you by the safest available route on each of its turns, unless there is nowhere to move. If the creature ends its turn in a location where it doesn't have line of sight to you, the creature can make a Wisdom saving throw. On a successful save, the effect ends for that creature. 1/long rest.

Relentless

As a FORCED reaction: When you fall below 25% hp, you gain advantage on all attacks against the last enemy to hit you. You are resistant to piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage. You are hyper-focused on your last opponent are will pursue them until they are dead/subdued. You ignore all other enemy, to include attacks of opportunity you may have made.

Canine Endurance

Your predatory sense kicks in and allows you to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you move 0 feet on one of your turns.

Bite Attack

You may make the bite attack. Strength or Dexterity are your attack modifiers. The bite does 1D4 damage.

Tenacious Bite

Bonus Action: Tenacious Bite. A successful bite melee produces the chance to bite down on your opponent grappling them with advantage on your strength roll against their strength or dexterity saving roll. Successful grappling will inflict an additional 1d6 piercing damage. If the grapple is not broken after 3 turns, your opponent is dragged into the prone position.
