Homebrew Anura (Frog People) Species Details
The Anura are a tribe of hardy, reclusive frog people who live deep in the Mere of Dead Men. They appear like burly bipedal frogs to most humanoid races. Some explorers from other Sword Coast communities who have visited the Mere have reported encounters with a race of "goliath frog barbarians." Some reports suggest they're peaceful; others that they are bloodthirsty cannibals. (Size: M | Spd: Walk 25, Swim 30)
Appearance
The smooth skin of the Anura is typically a green, brown or dark reddish color, or patterns of those three. This can vary depending on their diet and environment. They have thin hind legs with thick, highly developed thighs. Their abdomen is typically slender as well, with shoulders, arms and neck that tend to appear large and relatively hulking to most humanoids.
Culture
The Anura have a strong sense of community. The Tribe comes first, always, and any friends of the tribe or allies made will be treated with the same loyalty. The most sacred and protected places in Anura villages are their tadpole wells, where the young develop until they can walk on land.
On dry land, Anura mainly get around by walking on their hind legs. They are excellent leapers as well, but this isn't typically sustainable for travel, and tends to be problematic in armor or carrying gear.
The Anura do not mine or smith metal, but they do use it. Much can be found as salvage, hoard, or battle spoils, in the Mere of Dead Men.
Player Classes
While an Anura could theoretically be any class, the only ones available to tribesfrogs in the Mere are: Barbarian, Druid, Fighter, Ranger, and (very rarely) Sorcerer.
Enemies
They do not go out of their way to make war, but in the Mere there is always a bigger predator. Bullywugs are the forever-enemy of the Anura.
Habitat
Of and from the swamp, the Anura are amphibious, and excellent swimmers. They can breathe in air or in healthy, fresh water.
Diet
Omnivores, the Anura cultivate swamp crops, and hunt or trap bugs, reptiles, worms, crustaceans, and fish.
Anura (Frog People) Traits
Surviving in the swamps has made the amphibious Anura strong and hardy.Amphibious
The Anura can breathe in air or in fresh, clean water. Conditions that would cause respiratory challenges in either medium still apply.
Swamp Hardiness
Swamp life has developed the Anura with strong immune and toxicity responses. As such, they have a resistance to poison and a strong constitution (STR +2, CON +1 at creation).
Ambush Predator
Anura are at their most effective in hunting and warfare when they can hide and ambush their prey or enemy. As such, they advantage on stealth checks if they are in water deep enough to submerge. (Advantage to stealth checks, but only when they can submerge 90% of their body.)
Leapers
Anura are accomplished leapers, and can add up to 10ft to their attempts to jump, both horizontally or vertically. Additionally, jumping costs half the movement on a successful Strength (Athletics) check.
Low-light Vision
Accustomed to the dim light of the swamps, Anura have low-light vision, allowing them to see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of shadowy illumination. It retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
