Homebrew Clay Golem Species Details

Clay Golems are amorphous beings typically shaped like stone statues. Their body remains semi-fluid and changeable. They have no internal organs, their bodies are made entirely of living clay; they feel, see, touch, smell, and taste through the magic that animates them. They can eat though they do not require food; they do not digest food and they must eventually expel the food waste.

When golems sleep they become rigid and appear to be stone statues.

Clay Golems are made from living clay found exclusively in the quarries near the town of Redboot. Over the last 300 years their community has boomed since a group of Golems seized the quarries from wealthy merchants who forced them into service. Since then they have developed a unique culture and community with a budding religion centered around the Lifeclay, a god-like figure from which living clay originates. A major tenet of Clay Golem culture is mining and manufacturing new golems.

All new Clay Golems are created by Sculptors who act as a parental figure. Sculptors are Clay Golems who have received special training in order to 'birth' new golems; this is considered a divine calling and Sculptors are treated with reverence in Clay Culture. Sculpting also comes with responsibilities, they are expected to abandon other pursuits and spend their lives Sculpting. Though Clay Golems remain semi-mutable throughout their lives it is believed in Clay Culture that the hands that shaped a golem leave an inexorable mark on each individual that affect their personalities.
