Homebrew Wyvernborn Species Details

“Do not mistaken them as Dragonborn, they find that insulting. I once did it and they bit my arm trying to rip it off. They take being a Wyvernborn with great pride and will make sure you know it."

-City Guard

It’s unclear how it happened, but Wyvernborns are almost exactly the same as their cousin race Dragonborn’s. Despite the two races being almost exactly the same, Wyvernborn seem themselves as a higher race compared to the Dragonborn. What makes them different is they appear more like Wyvern's and the breath weapon they use works differently.

Wyvernborn are always an interest to researchers and dragon experts due to how unknown their history is. Many Wyverns are welcomed in important places to learn more about them and the past.

Proud Wyvern Kin

Wyvernborn take big pride in being related to Wyverns. They see Dragonborn as a weaker and inferior race while other races are dependent on actions they see first hand, but mostly seem to favor Humans from all the stories they bring. A Wyvernborn enjoys hearing stories of legendary hero's and figures either it be fiction or not. They favor Wyverns and tend to ignore stories about legendary dragons as hero's or gods.

Despite being close to Wyvern's. the blood of a particular type of dragon runs very strong through some Wyvernborn clans. These Wyvernborn often boast scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor—bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze. Spikes or even horns often are a racial feature based on the Wyvern bloodline they have.

Clans of Pride and Honor

Hearing the many stories of heros and legends, Wyvernborn clans are filled with strong warriors and live with a code of honor. In the clans, each member often makes there daily life based on a figure they admire. Many clans are small since Wyvernborn will often go out to become an adventurer, but they come back to the clan to bring stories, treasure, and supplies. Clans are important to the Wyvernborn as they treat themselves as family.

Stories they hear or read are often written down to keep record. These records are open to anyone to read to become inspired one day at a young age. All though it is extremely rare,  some clan will accept Dragonborn stories. Clans will refuse any stories of dragons that are a hero or god while stories of Wyverns are a favorite along elders. Despite having many records, the history of themselves seems to be lost or mixed with different tales. Some of them are stories of dragons, but instead it is a wyvern that later gives birth to the race.

Honor is like a religion to them, if they cannot honor a task they punish themselves till they feel as though they redeemed themselves. This sense of honor is so strong, Wyvernborn will attempt to take up tasks of others that failed. If one disrespects honor, they will attempt to punish the other if they do not try to redeem themselves.

Wyvernborn Names

A Wyvernborn is given a name at birth, but are allowed to change the name at adult age. If they do, they use the birth name as a second name to honor the family line. Most Wyvernborn will use the same name through generations since it is common for them to change what name they desire. These family line names often are from famous Wyverns in tales or history and most Wyverns name themselves after an important figure or hero.

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the range and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, the targeted creature must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon 3 times, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
