Homebrew Bean-Sídhe Species Details

Bean-Sídhe are Fey who are particularly sensitive to the call of death to those around them. They are best known for the involuntary wail they release when someone is close to death.

Lonely Road

The Bean-Sídhe are by nature solitary creatures, coming into being alone in battlefields and in churchyards. Their association with death has lead them to be shunned by most races, even among other fey. When they do join settlements, they try to keep their nature a secret in order to avoid stoking fear in their neighbors. Oftentimes they will settle in small groups, to take solace in each others' company and enjoy the safety of not needing to hide with one another. This isolated existence has lead the Bean-Sídhe to be tinged with an obvious melancholy, which makes their forewarnings of death all the more ominous.

Spirits Walking

The Bean-Sídhe are born from the sorrow that naturally collects around the recently deceased, which is why they tend to appear at the sites of recent battles or tragic events. While they always appear to be women, their form is malleable based on the circumstances of their birth. One born on a battlefield may resemble a soldier who lost her comrades-at-arms, or like the wives and sisters they left behind. One born at a cemetery might look like an icon of a goddess near the graves. This certainly makes it easier to hide, as there is not definitive marker for a Bean-Sídhe other than their signature wailing.

Call of Death

When one near the Bean-Sídhe would die without further intervention, they involuntarily let out a heart wrenching scream. The sorrow that led to their birth has been reactivated. Like all seers, the Bean-Sídhe are often blamed for these predictions, as if the wail causes the death. In fact the opposite is true – enterprising adventurers who can relieve themselves of this bias might wish to have Bean-Sídhe around, to know when one in their party who has fallen in battle is truly on the brink of death, or may stabilize.

Ability Score Adjustment

Your Wisdom score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1, to a maximum of 20.

Your Charisma score decreases by 1, to a minimum of 0.

Age

Bean-Sídhe come into being fully mature in places where many will soon die, such as battlefields. Unless killed, they live for hundreds of years.

Darkvision

Accustomed to the shifting twilight of the Feywild, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keening

The Bean-Sídhe can produce a haunting wail that affects those who hear it. You know the Thunderclap cantrip, but when cast it sounds like a scream rather than thunder. At fifth level, you learn the spell Shatter (which sounds like a scream when you cast it), and can cast it as a second level spell without material components a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus. You regain all uses after a long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting trait for these spells.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Sylvan, and one extra language of your choice. Typically, this is the language spoken in the area where they were born.

Mourning Wail

Whenever a living creature within 90 feet that makes death throws is reduced to zero hit points, that creature rolls six d20 immediately and records the outcomes in order. If the creature rolls nine or below three times before rolling 10 or above three times, the Bean-Sídhe lets out an involuntary wail as she senses imminent death, alerting all around. Over the creature's next turns, whenever they would make a death saving throw, instead of rolling a d20, that creature uses the next roll in the recorded sequence. If the creature dies or is stabilized, any remaining rolls are discarded.
