Child of the Dying Light
What happens when a resurrection goes horribly, horribly wrong? Does anything happen to the spirit/soul or does it just "move on" as normal?
In only a handful of ancient tomes, either long forgotten or long, lost to time is written that in such a minute chance of this occurring, the spirit/soul is "charged" with the essence of the reality of death and the power of life-giving magic and shatters as it is pulled back through the veil it first travelled through, only to be yanked back through it once more and now, set adrift, unable to complete it's journey. This odd, tentative union of life, death and the spirit/soul itself cause ripples of "something" to emanate . These ripples attract the attention of something ancient.
Pieced together from fragmented visions and dreams given to those that delved too deep and made deals to gain bits of forbidden knowledge and lore, speaks of an entity that resembles a strange cross between an elf and a goblin. This being swims along the veil gathering and collecting these very rare "baubles" and on a whim, travels to the Shadowfell where he has a small garden. He "plants" one of these fragments, like a seed, then returns until he feels like planting another or it's time to harvest.
Once planted, the fragment remains in the ground for one day before it starts to sprout. Within 12 hours, a large, grey pod will grow. The pod will be small to medium in size. Within an additional 12 hours, the pod will open, revealing a naked, slightly sticky, creature, lying in the fetal position. Once again, this strange entity arrives, collects the creature and returns it to the prime material plane in a survivable place of it's choosing.
Within a couple of hours, they will wake up. Their memories are heavily clouded. They have no idea how much time has past. It could be hours or centuries. They look and sound like themselves, with some major differences. Their skin is a slightly paler tone than it was. There are ever present wisps of black and white smoke-like spiritual energies that emanate and rise off their body. Their form slightly, but erratically shifts or phases in small pieces, in and out of the spirit realm. Their voice has a light, ghost-like, airy hiss to it. The biggest difference is the gaping hole in the middle of their torso. The hole is about 1/3 the width of their torso. Floating in the center of this opening, taking up about 1/4 of the space, is a sparkly, yellow, glowing light. The light has little wisps of black and white smoke-like energy floating around it.
This light, while not physically there, is a magical representation of your life force and the forces of life and death that have merged with it. As their health decreases, the light will dim and the wisps will slow.
The hole in the torso goes clean through and the edges have "healed" over. Anything placed in or through this hole will not be affected in any way,, nor affect or be felt by them. The light in the center will not be disturbed.
Because of their partially spectral form, they are quicker and more agile, but physically weaker.
Child of the Dying Light Traits
As a Child of the Dying Light, you have the following traits.Creature Type
You are any playable race of small to medium size.
Size
You are either small or medium in size.
Speed
Because of your unstable form, you are slightly quicker than normal. Your walking speed is 35 feet (if your race's base speed is above 30 feet, then add 5 feet to your speed).
Life and Death
Your very essence is charged with chaotic light and dark swirling energies. Every dawn, roll 1d6. On a 1-3, you are resistant to Radiant damage. On a 4-6, you are resistant to Necrotic damage.
Unstable Physicality
While your form is always slightly unstable, you have the ability to make it even more so. As a reaction, you cause your body to randomly and quickly shift in and out of solid form, making it harder to hurt you. You are resistant against all damage types except for psychic until the end of your next turn. You can do this 3 times per day and replenishes at dawn.
Altered Form
Your new body, while the same form, has been altered in many ways. You have become quicker and more agile in your speed and actions, but you aren't as physically strong as you once were. You have a -2 to your strength and a +2 to your dexterity.
Fragment of Life
You exist with only a small piece of your soul and an unstable body. Because of this, any Resurrection spell cast on you that fails a DC of 10, will cause your spirit/soul fragment to shatter, leaving you lost forever.
