Homebrew Changefolk (Amphibious Changeling) (v1.0.1) Species Details
With time comes evolution, and even those predisposed at an advantage against the others will still find a way to reveal all your secrets. The Changefolk are a split species of the Changeling, instead of taking to just the land, they decided to sneak their way into the doings of the water peoples. Though their take to the water has left them with immutable traits of those who also live underwater, leaving them in second place when compared to a normal Changeling on a trial of deception, though this is not to dismiss their ability to become what they see.
Their take to the water has made the Changefolk an amphibious creature, still being able to take to the land, but at a greater advantage in the water. Yet with this take to the water, they have gained gills, easy to cover with a cloth, but sometimes hard to hide when people look to close. Due to their time in the ocean under pressure, they have lost the ability to change their weight as easily due to the commonality of weightlessness, but instead have swapped it out for the ability to move mass around their body. Normally for the Changefolk, instead of being limited to the exact amount of limbs have found ways to very effectively split their bottom half into one, two, or three limbs, being a merfolk's tail, humanoid legs, or a triton's legs and tail, preferring the first and third statures when able. Though commonly due to the land dwellers not having tails, they will commonly redistribute their tail's mass, and due to their ability to move mass anywhere in their body, charismatic features are commonly chosen to give the mass to on land.
Due to the active nature of water species though, most water species remain around the same weights due to their fitness abilities, making disguising as anybody under the water still just as easy as on land, though for the less active land species, they find it hard to replicate their statures and may be inaccurate or may take a bit of sheep's wool.
And even though they may be a far way away from their fey ancestors on the tree of life, they still take from it like any other creature who had once stepped in those lands. Each Changefolk will choose to use their transformative abilities for peril or joy. Nearly exactly to the Changelings, they can adopt new forms to cause mischief or to help those in need.
In their true form, Changefolk look very similar to an expressionless, featureless, and dimmed triton, and would be very rare to see this form unless killed or the Changefolk wishes to reveal it.
Changefolk (Amphibious Changeling) (v1.0.1) Traits
Anybody can deceive, but can you look the part... and also not smell like the ocean?Ability Score Increase
The Changefolk are naturally deceptive creatures, so their ability to charm someone is already at an evolutionary advantage, with that, your Charisma Score is increased naturally by 2, along with the choice to increase one other stat by 1.
Age
Your age is more similar to those who live underwater due to your more fit lifestyle. Most Changefolk will be mature at the age of 17, and will most likely live to be 180, the oldest known was 247.
Size
Due to the loss of your ability to change your weight as freely as changelings, you cannot change as freely as most changelings, but Changefolk still come in an array of sizes with some being a small as dwarves and some as large as pallid elves or even your local raging barbarian!
Your height is commonly determined by the groups of tritons, merfolk, tortles, or any list of water born creature's tribes you may have been born into due to your parents wanting to fit in with your local environment, though this is not definite and can also be changed still quite fluently at the expenditure of moving around some of your mass. Including your tail, some Changefolk can exceed lengths of 9ft, and some who are born into smaller aquatic groups can be as small as 2.5ft, though most Changefolk will stay in the realm of a normal humanoid's height when the tail is not added.
Your weight is commonly determined by how fit your lifestyle is and some Changefolk have been known to be as light as 45 lbs, though some larger on life have been known to grow to half a ton, normally both extremes end with shorter lives, and most Changefolk will remain in the realm between 70 and 250lbs. And even though it is not as free, your weight on a scale can still be reduced by 20 lbs effortlessly, but nowhere near the 100+ a normal Changeling can, you can still choose to appear heavier as a normal changeling may, but your mass will not increase past 20 lbs of your chosen.
Speed
Your ability to transform between water proficient and land proficient species changes your speed quite often, though its very similar to each of the species you replicate.
If you are merfolk-like, your swimming speed is 60, and your walking speed (or rather flopping on the ground speed) is 5.
If you are triton-like, your swimming speed is 30, and your walking speed is 30.
If you are a humanoid, your swimming speed is 15, and your walking speed is 30.
Amphibious
You can breathe air and water, but as a downside, you always have gills. Though not necessary to be unblocked to live on land, meaning they can be hidden, this does mean that they can be found out and could give away that you are a Changefolk, as they are one of very few species that can look like a human entirely and have gills.
Amphibious Shapechanger
As an action, you can change your appearance and your voice. You determine the specifics of the changes, including your coloration, hair length, and sex, yet full body hair coverage will take the time of a short rest to transform into and you will always be uncomfortable in these hairy skins, especially any that have hair near your gills. You can also adjust your height and weight as explained before and can change your size between Medium and Small. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change, except those based around your speed. You can’t duplicate the appearance of an individual you’ve never seen, and you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs that you have unless you modify the amount of limbs beneath your waist correlating to the common types of underwater races being that of a merfolk's tail, a triton's legs and tail, or a humanoid's legs, you cannot grow a land dwelling creature's tail, but can take their form without it. Your clothing and equipment aren’t changed by this trait.
Amphibious Darkvision
You have Darkvision of 60ft underwater due to your time in underwater caves and the depths of the twilight zone. You do not have Darkvision on land.
Frigid Depths
Your time in the depths has now allowed you to commonly exist in them, with this, you are also accustomed to the extreme temperature gradient and have a natural resistance to cold damage, due to your ability to handle pressure too, you can easily deal with situations where high pressure may be a factor, you still need access to an air source to survive.
Languages
You can read, write, and speak Common and two languages of your choice.
Changefolk Instincts
Thanks to your connection to the fey realm, you gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Performance, or Persuasion.
Fey Ancestry
You are a fey. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Advanced Amphibious Shapechanger
With time to hone and learn your deceptive craft, when at 14th level, part of your ability to shapechage is the ability to hide certain features with transparent parts of your disguise, hiding your gills is still not fully possible this way, but it may make it easier. You can only shapechange into these partially transparent forms once per long rest and any transparent form you do take has to be concentrated on, with a DC 7 Constitution Saving throw having to be made any time this concentration may be broken, be that by damage or spellcasting. Any features that become no longer transparent can still become whatever the Changefolk wishes, and normal shapechanging still only takes one action.
