Homebrew Xolorian Species Details

Deep beneath the azure waves of the world lies an enchanted realm known as Xoloria, a place of wonder and magic, untouched by the passage of time. The Xolorians, born from the heart of this mystical underwater kingdom, are a race whose origins are woven from the essence of water and the ancient magic of the sea.

Xoloria, hidden from the surface, was a sanctuary of harmony and enlightenment, where the Xolorians cultivated a deep understanding of the mysteries of the deep and the rhythms of the ocean. As stewards of the sea's secrets and protectors of its treasures, the Xolorians lived in a state of peaceful coexistence with the aquatic world around them.

A great upheaval, however, fragmented their beloved realm, casting parts of Xoloria adrift. This event led the Xolorians to venture beyond their underwater sanctuaries, exploring rivers, lakes, and even daring to traverse the land above.

Adaptable and resilient, the Xolorians found new ways to thrive, using their innate magical abilities and affinity

for both land and water. They became known as curious explorers, gifted healers, and wise sages, carrying the legacy of Xoloria wherever they roamed. Their presence in various environments was marked by a blend of wonder and respect for the natural world, as they sought to share their knowledge and maintain the balance between land and sea.

The Xolorians' journey from their shattered underwater kingdom to the diverse landscapes of the surface world is a testament to their enduring spirit and the magic that flows through their veins.

Adaptive Transformation

  • Trigger: When a Xolorian reaches 3 levels of exhaustion due to lack of water, they undergo a significant physiological transformation and, hopefully, become a Terrestrial Xolorian. Roll a survival check, if it beats a DC 20, they survive the transformation, change race to the Terrestrial Xolorian subrace.
  • Effects of Transformation:
    • Enhanced Air Adaptation: They lose their Water Dependency trait and their swimming speed is reduced to 15 feet. However, they gain an increase in their land speed to 35 feet.
    • Terrestrial Resilience: They gain advantage on Constitution saving throws and checks made to resist effects of non-aquatic environments (extreme heat, dry conditions, etc.).
    • Reduced Aquatic Ability: While they can still breathe underwater, they no longer have the advantage on Stealth checks underwater and can only hold their breath for up to 30 minutes.
  • Physical Changes: Their skin may become less moist, gills less pronounced, and they may develop tougher, more resilient skin to protect against terrestrial elements.
  • Reversibility: This transformation is permanent unless reversed by powerful magic, such as the "Wish" spell or a deity's intervention.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Aquan. The Aquan language is infused with the lyrical and flowing qualities of Xoloria’s undersea heritage.

Terrestrial Xolorians

Terrestrial Xolorians are a rare subrace that has undergone a remarkable transformation due to prolonged periods out of water. This mutation, while stressful, has enabled them to become more adapted to terrestrial environments, at the cost of some of their aquatic abilities. This change is often seen as a last resort adaptation to extreme conditions. One in twenty Xolorians survive the transformation.

Lore:

Terrestrial Xolorians are often regarded with a mixture of awe and pity among their aquatic kin. They are seen as survivors, but also as reminders of the harsh realities of the world above the water. Many of them become wanderers, bridging the gap between aquatic and terrestrial realms, and some even become emissaries or ambassadors, using their unique perspective to foster understanding and cooperation between different races.
