Homebrew Anthronids Species Details

Introduction: Anthronids are kind caring creatures with a love for undersea life. They grow up in coral reef colonies and are divided into tribes based on their species. Free-spirited and unique, Anthronids explore the sea as if it was their own backyard.

Physical Description: A humanoid conglomeration of corals, often multicolored with frills. What they look like varies based on the species of coral that the creature is based on. The creature's appearance differs slightly between gender, with the males often having brighter colored corals, and the females having the colors of their corals toned down. Their eyes glow golden like sea lanterns and are described commonly by sailors as the "Stars of the Sea".  Depending on the species of coral, some Anthronids can grow up to seven feet tall, while some may only grow to about 3-4 feet tall. (NOTE: There will eventually be two major subraces, hard coral based Anthronids and soft coral based Anthronids.)

Society: Anthronids often live together creating either colonies or tribes depending on their political systems and values. A chiefdom will often encompass a smaller area, and the tribes tend to be more species specific. A tribe can safely contain a group of up to 20 Anthronids, while a colony could house up to 100 individuals. Colonies tend to be more diverse in species and take up a larger territory. Societies usually develop upon limestone deposits where Anthronid young can successfully begin their developmental process. Their societies can only grow so large as the deposit they were founded on, so to keep a stable population Anthronid explorers will often search for a new place to start a colony.

Lifespan: Anthronids can live for roughly 1,000 years if they are in close contact with their colonies. Colonies are a reservoir of symbiotic relationships regarding life force, Anthronids are able to leech off of eachother and the solar energy they receive to photosynthesize. Tribal Anthronids tend to have shorter lifespans, but they can live up to 300 years if in close contact with their tribe.  Loners or explorers have a drastically shorter lifespan, but more freedom and live unrestrained by tribal rituals and colonial politics. They can live up to 50 years on their own. Lifespans increase in areas with higher Anthronid populations. (NOTE: Pollution and lack of sunlight can cause shorter lifespans in colonial, tribal, and single Anthropods. Depending on the intensity of pollution, effects can cut an Anthronid lifespan in half. Lack of sunlight for a prolonged period of a week or more could mean death.)

Exploration and Protection: Anthronids value life; the creation and protection of life.  They are a beacon for smaller and weaker aquatic life forms who seek shelter from the tumultuous sea. Anthronid colonies are a safe haven and tend to be used as neutral/peace zones in dealing with underwater politics. Unfortunately, the colonies aren't sustainable forever since young Anthronids (Polyps) require plots of limestone to develop. (NOTE: Development process takes 20 years.) Once the deposits have been fully covered by developing Anthronoids "Explorers" (The most honorable members of the colonies/tribes) must find new deposits to continue the growth of their species. If explorers can find a new deposit of limestone they will return to their colonies with a new hope of survival for their species and will lead a portion of their people to a new home.

Loving and Wise: Anthronids are very caring, they build their societies on education and peace. They will not tolerate cruelty and will reject any parties who attempt combat on their turf. All disagreements are handled formally in Conclave, any form of physical harm or unsanctioned cruelty could lead to banishment from the tribe or colony for life. The colonies tend to have imposing military soldiers to keep the peace, they aren't prone to violence but will protect their own at all costs.

Names: Names are normally chosen by tribal elders or by city council members, parents often don't make the decision, but are allowed to. Names tend to be reflective of species and descent. Common names include but are not limited to...Pathiria, Pora, Ceorulia, Gyra, Dricus, Tipath, and Helio. No name is gender specific.

Anthronids Traits

Anthronids have been able to survive in their underwater homes for millenia because of these traits...

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by +2 and your Charisma Increases + 1

Since your kind are known for their diplomatic nature, it is only natural that you would be more Charismatic than most. Along with that, you were educated by the colony and have grown wise in their teachings.

Age

Anthronids reach maturity when they can be safely detached from their limestone deposits for long periods of time. And can live to be thousands of years old if conditions are ideal.

When Anthronids are first conceived, it can be done sexually or asexually. The Anthronid spawn is set on a large deposit of limestone where it can grow and develop. It can take up to 20 years for the polyps to fully develop and become mobile. They are considered adults as soon as they are fully developed but often aren't considered mature until their 100th year of mobility. Anthronids lifespan contest that of the Elves. They can live for thousands of years if conditions are ideal. The oldest Anthronid in recorded history lived for 3,000 years.

Allignment

Most Anthronids are lawful good. They live and die by their good graces and wise ways in order to keep their societies reputation intact.

No one really knows how long Anthronids have walked the ocean floor, but most Islanders agree that the "Coral Creatures" have been there since the dawn of the era. Some speculate that ever since the incident of the "Sea Tear" ocean life has been developing rapidly due to previously unrecognized magics. Most believe that this magic endows the Anthronids with good intentions and otherworldly wisdom. They follow relaxed rules and guidelines, but their societies are heavily morals based, as they are a safe haven for all creatures of the sea.

Size

Anthronids stand between 3-7 feet tall. Your size is medium.

The size of an Anthronid depends on its species and the amount of time it was given to develop. The size that they are when they detach from their plots is the size that they remain for the rest of their lives.  Size can affect what kind of job you are given. The larger more intimidating Anthronids tend to have more military power, while the smaller more peaceable Anthronids tend to have more political positions.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 15 feet. Your base swimming speed is 30ft.

Anthronids don't need to do much walking and can be a bit cumbersome depending on their size and species. For this reason, they have adapted to swimming.

Coral Communications

This feat allows you to nonverbally communicate with members of your colony, species, and/or tribe if you can see each other.

Through deep magical connections, Anthronids they are able to communicate images and basic concepts to eachother without speaking. To transfer these thoughts, the messenger Anthronid must have visual confirmation on the receiving Anthronid. This feat is useful in political meetings when one party does not wish to cause an uprising or insult another party. It's easier than Ocean Speak and comes more naturally to the majority of the Anthronid population.

Tentacle Terror

Three times every short rest Anthronids can deal 2d4 poison damage to their prey, using their venomously, barbed tentacles.

Most commonly used for nutritional purposes, if they can't amass enough energy through photosynthesis they can use their hidden tentacles to grab small prey from outside their Colonies. They don't enjoy doing so, but they would rather eat than starve. It is illegal in Anthronid societies to use their tentacles to harm others, harming small fish and other non-empathetic creatures is allowed but frowned upon. The tentacle/tentacles tend to be of the same coloration as the rest of the body so that they remain camouflaged from hostiles and prey.

Friend to All

You have proficiency in the Animal Handling skill.

As the protectors of aquatic life, Anthronids have grown accustomed to dealing with aquatic creatures. Secret teachings from elders have been passed down through generation and generation. But some Anthronids have found that they are just naturally attractive to animals and that they can be a calming presence all on their own.

Languages

You can read, write, and speak in, Anthropoly the language of the Anthronids and Ocean Speak. (Essentially Aqua Common.)

Anthropoly is the constantly changing language of the Anthronids. (Mostly used for carvings, art, and texts.) It isn't spoken as often, but when it is, it's often spoken in a formal situation. Such as a Conclave event, or a political meeting. In it's written form the characters are angular and strict, but also have a delicate air. When spoken it sounds very slurred and mystical, sentences are often concluded with the "bubble pop". Some sailors have said that it sounds like singing.
