Homebrew Aluminium can Species Details

The use of aluminum in cans began in 1957. Aluminum offers greater malleability, resulting in ease of manufacture; this gave rise to the two-piece can, where all but the top of the can is simply stamped out of a single piece of aluminium, rather than constructed from two pieces of steel. The inside of the can is lined by spray coating an epoxy lacquer or polymer to protect the aluminium from being corroded by acidic contents such as carbonated beverages and imparting a metallic taste to the beverage. The epoxy may contain bisphenol A. A label is either printed directly on the side of the can or will be glued to the outside of the curved surface, indicating its contents.

Most aluminium cans are made of two pieces. The bottom and body are "drawn" or "drawn and ironed" from a flat plate or shallow cup. After filling, the can "end" is sealed onto the top of the can. This is supplemented by a sealing compound to ensure the top is airtight.

The advantages of aluminium over steel (tinplate) can include;

  • lightweight
  • competitive cost
  • usage of easy-open aluminium ends: no need for a can opener
  • clean appearance
  • aluminium does not rust
  • easy to press into shape

The easy-open aluminium end for beverage cans was developed by Alcoa in 1962 for the Pittsburgh Brewing Company and is now used in nearly all of the canned beer market.

Recycling

Aluminium cans can be made with recycled aluminium. In 2017, 3.8 million tons of aluminium were generated in the US of which 0.62 million tons were recycled - a recycling rate of 16%. According to estimates from the Aluminum Association, a large amount of aluminium remains unrecycled in the US, where roughly $700 million worth of cans end up in landfills each year. In 2012, 92% of the aluminium beverage cans sold in Switzerland were recycled. Cans are the most recycled beverage container, at a rate of 69% worldwide.

One issue is that the top of the can is made from a blend of aluminium and magnesium to increase its strength. When the can is melted for recycling, the mixture is unsuitable for either the top or the bottom/side. Instead of mixing recycled metal with more aluminium (to soften it) or magnesium (to harden it), a new approach uses annealing to produce an alloy that works for both.

The aluminium can is also considered the most valuable recyclable material in an average recycling bin. It is estimated that Americans throw away nearly 1 billion dollars a year in wasted aluminium. The aluminium industry pays almost 800 million dollars a year for recycled aluminium since it is so versatile.

Because of the advantages of aluminium packaging (shelf life, durability, food-grade factor) over plastics, it is considered an alternative to PET bottles, with the possibility of replacing most of them in the next decades.

 

Aluminium can Traits

Nobody knows how an Aluminium can came to life, but is more perplexing is the abilities that the can possesses.

Dense, but not too dense

Because your entire body is made of Aluminium, you are able to take more hits than usual, however, your thin layers make it more difficult to maintain taking hits. Because of this, your constitution score increases by 1.

Immobile, but round.

Because you have no limbs, your dexterity decreases by 2 & you cannot walk, however, you can use a bonus action on your turn to tip over to move 15 ft. in one direction, you are able to move into the same space as other creatures but cannot climb surfaces, including ramps.

Each time you tip over, you must make a DC 5 Constitution saving throw or take 1d4 - 1 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone.

Liquid Reservoir

Starting at 1st level, you are able to open up the tab at the top of your body to spray out whatever liquid is inside of you at the time.

You are able to spray out a liquid inside of you using Constitution as your modifier for this attack. This attack deals 2d8 damage of your choice of Acid, Poison, or Cold damage in a 10 ft line in one direction, stopping when it hits something, this attack cannot be used again until you get a new liquid into yourself.

You are able to use your body as a Reservoir for liquids, using an action you can open up to collect any liquid within 1 ft. of yourself, the next time you spray out a liquid, you spray out that liquid.

Sharp when cut

Because of your metal body, you become dangerously sharp when you have been damaged, your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 + your Constitution modifier slashing damage if you are below your maximum HP.

"Immune" system

Because you have no organs or blood, you are immune to poison damage, the poisoned condition, you also do not need to eat, drink, breathe or sleep

Better when cold

starting at 5th level, Because of your advancing design, you have resistance to cold damage when you have a liquid inside yourself; if in extreme cold, your spray attack deals 1 extra damage die.

Age, height, weight, & alignments

Cans tend to not have alignments due to not needing to trifle with the affairs of humanoids, however, if they were to pick one, it would be neutral.

Cans have no set age of death, due to never being able to die from age.

Cans tend to be at most 5 inches tall and weigh 0.0330693 pounds or 15 ounces.
