Homebrew Dla'at (Not my creation, I simply moved it to D&D Beyond) Species Details
Late October, dead of night
I wandered on despite my fright
Passing graves and barrows cold
Kings and beggars, same now old
The Pumpkin Man appeared to me
"Come, and trade your weary soles,
For warmth of fire and belly full"
I followed after, took his hand,
And 'fore I knew, my soul was damned.
- The Pumpkin Man, author unknown
The Dla'at are a race of demons that feed on unsuspecting souls. Appearing human save for a jack-o-lantern head, the flames behind their eyes hide ill intent for anyone who meets them. The Dla'at are lovers of magical contracts, offering deals to their unwitting victims, and winning their souls in the fine print. The hapless victim will be split from their essence, their body becoming a double of the monster and their soul eaten by their captor. A wary adventurer, however, will find the Dla'at loath to refuse negotiations, and should they manage to trick it into a bad deal, the Dla'at will never break it's contract under any circumstances. But be warned, the fine print is often very fine indeed...
