Homebrew Bird-folk Species Details

These creatures are two to three feet tall with the appearance of a bird. An awakened creature with sentience as any other humanoid.  They have long, narrow legs that taper to sharp talons, and wings that end in taloned four fingered hands. Feathers cover their bodies. Their coloration and plumage varies depending on the species of bird that they have originated from.

With hollow bones, they are capable of flight when unburdened by a pack.

Awakened Animal

Whether created by accident or on purpose, these creatures were granted the ability to take the form and mental abilities of a sentient humanoid.

Cultural Imprinting

Many have imprinted on the first humanoid they encountered, and created a strong feeling of attachment to the race, culture, and sometimes even personality of the humanoid. While they do not tend to develop into settlements of their own, they might flock together and bring bits and pieces of collected other species' culture into their own, making each one unique and a bit chaotic.

Travel Patterns

They also might feel an affinity to nature, and enjoy travel through the wild unguided due to an uncanny sense of direction and instinctive memory for places they have traveled before.

Bird-folk Traits

These small bird-folk begin with a fly speed which is optional depending on type of bird.

Innate Patterns

You have advantage on any Wisdom (Survival) check you make to navigate a space that you have, even briefly, traveled through. This also can be utilized with an attempt to memorize directions or a map.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Bird-folk reach maturity by age 11. They would consider old age anywhere from 30-70 depending on their base bird and blessed by a few additional years due to their encounter with magic.

Size

Bird-folk are size small or medium, rarely reaching over 3 foot in height. They have lightweight bodies to aid their flying ability.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Flight

You have a flying speed of 50 feet. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor or burdened.

Talons and Beak

Your talons and beak are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing or piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common. You can also speak, read, and write the language of the first humanoid encountered.
