Homebrew Arctic Kitsune Species Details
A hardy vulpine race, Kitsune are natural hunters with a deep connection to the spiritual. They are a people that are deeply magical, independent, and often mischievous. With their deep connection to the arcane and view of gods as the personification of natural concepts, magecraft becomes a much different thing in the hands of the Kitsune; so far as they are concerned, magicks of the natural, arcane, and divine bear little difference to one another, and can all be traced back to both the gods and the world around them. It is precisely this spiritual link to the world around them that allows them to live such long lives, given they nurture their wisdom and insight adequately.
These fox-like people can have wildly varying features. Their hair can be common shades of black, brown, and auburn, though are sometimes even a snow white or golden blonde. Their eyes often betray their otherwise mostly-human appearance, appearing in vibrant colors such as gold, crimson, amber, emerald, or cyan, with pupils that narrow vertically to better facilitate their ability to hunt in dark and obscured areas. Their tails can range from about one-and-a-half feet to three feet long, and the hair on their head, as well as the fur of their tails and ears, is typically quite voluminous. The number of their tails can range from one to nine, though it is uncommon to see on with a greater number than three; a Kitsune who has attained nine tails will have reached a status that, among their kin, could be considered nearly divine.
Arctic Kitsune Traits
The Kitsune, despite their arcane nature, do not always nurture their magicks, instead opting to hone their primal instincts.Ability Score Increases
When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.
Life Span
Your life span as a Kitsune is determined by your number of tails. With one tail, you have an average life span of 100 years, and you add 100 years for every tail you acquire thereafter. When acquiring your ninth tail, your life span increases immensely, and you become something akin to divinity among members of your race.
Languages
Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.
Creature Type
You are a Humanoid.
Size
You are Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.
Spiritual Growth
As your insight and experience increase, so too do your number of tails. At first level, you have one tail, approximately one-and-a-half to three feet in length. At 4th level, and every four levels thereafter, you gain one additional tail. Furthermore, by accomplishing major character goals, experiencing especially uplifting events, or through the grace of the gods, you may be granted an additional tail, at the discretion of your DM, up to a maximum total of 9.
Each time you gain a tail, your life span increases by 100 years. Upon gaining your ninth tail, instead your life span increases by 1d8 x 100 years. You may additionally undergo some changes to other appearance traits at this time, such as a change in the color or length of your hair.
Fox Arcana
Kitsune have a deep connection to the spiritual, and as a result, some magic comes as naturally to them as breathing. You know the dancing lights cantrip, and one other cantrip of choice. You know the faerie fire spell, and you can cast it once with this trait. You cannot cast it again this way until you finish a short or long rest unless you use a spell slot to do so.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race). You may only cast spells through this feature while in possession of your Star Sphere.
Star Sphere
Shortly after a Kitsune's birth, when they become able to use their mystic powers, an orb known as the Star Sphere is formed, and becomes linked to the Kitsune for life. This orb glows faintly with fox-fire, and is said to contain a fragment of their soul, serving as a spiritual focus for their mystic arts. The Star Sphere is magical, weighs 1lb, and you can use it as a spellcasting focus.
The Star Sphere's AC equals your Kitsune spell save DC. Its hit points equal your level plus your proficiency bonus, it is immune to poison and psychic damage, and it has resistance to all other damage.
If the Star Sphere is destroyed or you lose it, you can perform a 1-hour ceremony to create a replacement using your innate magical abilities. This ceremony can be performed during a short or long rest, the previous Star Sphere is destroyed if it still exists, and you gain a level of exhaustion upon completion.
Trickster's Guise
Kitsune often hide their true form around members of other races, whether to avoid attention, escape disdain, or spring the perfect prank. As a bonus action, you can hide your vulpine traits, assuming the appearance of a specific human of the same sex. You always take the same form when using this feature, and your appearance in this form is nearly identical to your natural form, though your tails disappear, your fox ears are replaced with human ears, and your eyes take on a humanoid shape and coloration. You remain in this form until you use a bonus action to revert to your true form or until you die.
You must have possession of your Star Sphere to use this feature, which merges into your human form, though it still acts as a spellcasting focus. You must still have a free hand for your somatic components.
Heightened Instinct
Kitsune have powerful senses, both physical and spiritual. Choose one of the following options for your Kitsune:
Arctic Acclimation. You have resistance to cold damage. Additionally, you ignore difficult terrain created by ice or snow.
Mystic Attunement. You have advantage on Arcana checks made to identify a spell or the effects of a spell. Additionally, you can sense when magic is used within 30 feet of you, although you cannot discern its location or effects this way.
Vulpine Cunning. While in your natural form, you have advantage on Perception checks made using your sense of hearing or smell, and you can't be surprised while you are conscious.
You only gain the benefits of this feature while in possession of your Star Sphere.
Natural Weapon
While they prefer to act with elegance, they won't hesitate to use their teeth where weapons and magic fail. While in your natural form, you have sharp fangs that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with it, the bite deals 1d4 + your Strength modifier piercing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Posted May 14, 2024The DM of the campaign I was asked to create this for uses the average height and weight table for humans, I believe. If I were to give a good baseline, I'd use the following:
Base Height: 4'7" x 2d6
Base Weight: 90 lbs. + (Height Multiplier) x 1d6
That being the case, you should of course check with your DM to see what makes the most sense for their world first and foremost.
