Homebrew Yaunfling Species Details
"Some may call these people freaks, but I find them endearing. I remember when I was, but a child, a yaunfling was the very reason I was alive. I had wandered away from my village out of curiosity. I had always wondered what lurked within the forests. I had managed to get a decent ways away from my village before I was surrounded by dire wolves. Screaming for help would have done nothing for me that day. The village folk would have never heard me.
Paralyzed with fear, I thought my life was soon to end. I remember the rustling of the leaves from a hovering tree as clear as day. Three yaunfling had dove down from the trees and into the circle, weapons drawn. Despite having never known me, they were willing to protect some random child. At first, I was terrified at the sight of them. Long, scaly tails with slicked back horns, tribalistic clothing, and tattoos covering their bodies. The village had always spoken so ill of the yaunfling, as if they were some form of ancient evil. Yet there they were, protecting an innocent child. In my opinion, they are simply misunderstood, but then again, aren't we all?"
-Renegarde Castelle
Yaunfling are known to be a rather neutral race. Their morales vary heavily counting completely on the tribe they are born into. While some may feel inclined to protect the forest, others may choose to focus fully on raids and wars.
Yaunfling Physical Traits
Yaunfling are known to display a mixture of yaunti and tiefling traits. Yaunfling mainly have the natural body composition of a tiefling, but their skin mixes between patches of scales and hellish skin. Yaunfling skin can vary from red, blue, purple, pink, and green. Unlike other tieflings where their horns can vary in their shape and direction, yaunfling horns always lean directly backwards. Yaunfling range from 4-6 feet tall, but average at 5'6. Their tails are always 4-5 feet longer than their actual bodies. This allows them to use it to hang from trees, to snatch items from places out of reach, and to help with balance. Cutting off their tails can cause severe balance problems, possibly even disabling. For them, losing a tail is similar to losing a pinky toe. Lastly, yaunfling have mainly normal teeth except for their pair of fangs near the front.
Outcasted Freaks
Outcasted and rejected by most of society, the yaunfling roamed aimlessly throughout the world for ages. For centuries, they hopped from island to island in hopes for an eventual home that would accept them. Tieflings and yaunti would take pity on them, but even their own blood would not fully welcome them. Eventually, the yaunfling grew tired of the endless roaming and began setting up tribal camps across the world. Heavily forested islands are rumored to be home to these poor outcasts. Yaunfling gained such a horrible reputation due to rumors that were spread throughout history. Throughout the time of their existence, they have been rumored to be monsters, only seeking bloodshed and death. Some say that they feed on human flesh while others believe for them to be more devious and barbaric than orcs or gnolls.
Yaunfling Culture
The yaunfling culture commonly leads most yaunfling to become monks, rogues, or warlocks. Monks are the most common within the race as they tend to try and harmonize with the world around them, despite the aggression shown to their people. Warlock quickly comes behind monk in popularity as many yaunfling throw harmony to the side and call upon chaotic deities and patrons to lend them strength for war. Yaunfling rogue tend to act as spies and scouts during wars and as lookouts for the tribal camps during times of peace.
The tribal camps created by yaunfling tend to mimic similar to that of tribal camps found within india. Their houses are often modeled as small, wooden huts built upon stilts to raise themselves above the ground. The rooves are structured with wooden supports, straws and tree limbs woven inbetween the wooden supports to create a sturdy, but slick roof. They often will have a fire pit built within the middle of their huts to be used for warmth, cooking, and other activities and necessities. Typically, they will have benches that line the walls to act as resting areas during rainy and hot days, but also serve as beds when the night comes. Wooden fences typically surround the camp with torches scattered throughout the camp for proper lighting.
When it comes to clothing, the yaunfling's clothing choice often showed some form of class within the camp's systems. Yaunfling witches and magic users can be seen wearing an assortment of shiny jewelry and accessories crafted from the finest minerals that the yaunflings can get ahold of. From bronze to gold to platinum, the yaunflings give these to their magic users as gifts in exchange for guidance, protection, or healing, counting on the type of magic they wield. Magic users tend to be given fancier clothing (ex. Saree and Lakota dresses). Martial warriors tend to wear loose clothing such as Dhoti's or leather armored clothing mixed with furs and pelts of slain beasts.
Tail Situps
Yaunfling have a favorite past time that allows them to continue to strengthen their mind, body, and soul. By wrapping their tail firmly on a sturdy branch, yaunfling will do hanging sit ups. This forces the muscles in their tail to hold their body in a dangling position whilst they do their sets. A common past time for the yaunfling!
