Homebrew Absolotl Species Details

Absolotls are yet another of the world's paradoxical hybrids. They are amphibious, human-shaped creatures with the features of axolotls, including gills and a tail. No one knows how they came about. They are reclusive and prefer to stay out of the limelight among other races, but they have still created a few large cities, and even complex social hierarchies like humans. For the most part they are extremely sociable and form relationships with ease (though there is debate surrounding whether this is simply because axolotls are adorable).

Physically they are very strong due to their muscular limbs, which are optimal for swimming but have practical uses in combat as well. They have human-like lungs, which enables them to remain out of water indefinitely, and the gills on their heads allow them to swim for up to 15 minutes without having to surface for air. Their heads resemble an axolotl more closely than any other part of their body, with small eyes, a lipless mouth, and two small nostrils. Their hearing is limited due to not having ears as developed as humans or other races. Their hands have 4 fingers each, and they have 4 webbed toes on each foot, making them excellent swimmers. Five skin colors have been observed, the most common being pink, with the others being brown, white, and yellow, with blue appearing very rarely due to a mutated gene.

They are mostly warriors due to their ideal physique, and even those who do not participate in combat often find themselves with the creation of weaponry and battle gear. This, combined with their natural skill at combat, makes them deadly (but adorable) enemies.

Absolotl Traits

As an Absolotl, you have a few unique abilities.

Ability Score Increase

Absolotls are very strong and agile, allowing you to hit harder and move faster. Increase your Strength score by 2 and your Dexterity score by 1.

Aquatic Breathing

As an axoloid, your gills allow you to remain underwater for much longer than other land races can, but you will run out of oxygen if you do not surface for at least 3 seconds after 15 minutes.

Skin Camoflage

You can alter your skin color to better match your surroundings, making it easier to blend in with your environment if you are not moving. When standing still, you have Advantage on Stealth checks.

Limited Hearing

Your underdeveloped ears make hearing difficult, so listening closely is not as effective for you.

Call of the Deep (level 10)

The Sea has begun to call you, encouraging you to return to its depths and seek out its secrets. You can remain submerged indefinitely without surfacing for air. You gain 10 extra feet of movement while swimming. You also have Advantage on Perception checks while submerged.
