Homebrew Cillannan Species Details
The Cillannan are a massive hybrid race, combining draconic and avian traits into a formidable and awe-inspiring form. On average they stand 10-14 feet tall, with bodies covered in a coat of sleek, metallic feathers.
Their draconic heritage manifests in a thick, sinewy tail, sharp talons on their feet and hands, and a powerful muscular build. However, their most imposing feature is their gigantic feathered wings, spanning 23 feet from tip to tip when fully extended.
These wings allow the Cillannan to take flight with surprising agility and speed for their size. They can reach bursts over 600 mph and cruise at 250 mph, making them among the fastest flyers in any realm. The feathers reduce drag while the wing muscles generate incredible thrust.
Remnants of their draconic bloodline emerge in their ability to unleash gouts of elemental energies from their maws as breath weapons - be it corrosive acid, searing flames, dehydrating clouds, or other destructive forces. Their hides are also exceptionally tough and resistant to damage.
On land, Cillannan are tremendously strong, capable of smashing through obstacles and opponents with their might. Their claws make them deadly in melee combat as well.
Culturally, the Cillannan remain a reclusive and noble race of aerial wanderers, establishing only temporary roosts and aeries before taking wing once more. They see themselves as the apex flyers and hoard no treasures beyond open skies.
Pathfinder
In the Pathfinder campaign setting, the Cillannan originate from the Elemental Planes, representing the union of primal Air and Fire energies given physical form.
An ancient race predating most mortal civilizations, the Cillannan were brought into being by the Elemental Lords themselves during the formation of the multiverse as living embodiments and enforcers of their respective elements.
As winged harbingers of searing flames and hurricanic winds, the Cillannan spent eons as nomadic celestial powers, descending briefly from the Inner Planes to raze whole kingdoms or scatter armies who angered the elemental forces.
In modern eras, few but the most powerful had the ability to summon or bargain with Cillannan champions to serve as terrifying allies. Encounters were rare but always left destruction in their wake.
As a playable race, Cillannan could have the Native Outsider trait, phenomenal Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores, and a fly speed of 100+ feet. They could have powerful claw and bite natural attacks, energy resistance, and the ability to unleash elemental breaths like burning hands or lightning bolts a certain number of times per day.
Dungeons & Dragons
In the D&D multiverse, the Cillannan have direct ties to the ancient Bakemono - the first dragons corrupted by the Dragon Queen Tiamat into her terrible primordial brood during the Dawn War.
When Tiamat was finally defeated and banished, a few of her most powerful Bakemono creations survived into modern eras, eternally warped into terrifying new forms.
Some coupled with mighty avian creatures, creating the first Cillannan - a blasphemous fusion of draconic might and raptor-like features and abilities. Their chaotic nature prevented them from ever fully organizing into greater threats.
The rare Cillannan encountered today are individualistic and formidable adversaries, with their own unique draconic heritage and elemental breath attacks. They make for dynamic villains or allies to acquire through diabolical means.
As a playable race, Cillannan could be reflavored Dragonborn, but substantially larger, able to fly, and with stronger natural attacks. Or a new race could provide Dexterity-based dragon breath weapons, natural armor, and other draconic traits combined with powerful wings and aerial combat abilities unlike anything else.
