Homebrew Willful Undead Species Details

The willful undead are animated corpses, newly awakened with intelligence and free will. They have little to no memory of their life, or what may have happened to them following their death. Reborn in undeath, the willful undead must make their way in an unfamiliar and hostile world. As a rule, undead creatures are feared, hunted, and attacked on sight. Many disoriented and confused willful undead have been slain before they even had a chance to explain themselves.

Superficially, they resemble zombies. However, instead of lifeless eyes, the eyes of the willful undead glow with the necrotic power which animates them. In life they were human, half-elves, or half-orcs. Something about the tenacity of the human spirit has allowed them to carry on... likely after the death of whatever necromancer brought them back from the grave to be used as servants or guards.

Willful Undead Names

The willful undead become self aware with only the vaguest sense of their former lives. Perhaps they recall a name given to them, by parents or their creator, or perhaps they adopted the name on the first signpost they came across.

Willful Undead Traits

Your willful undead character is fueled by necromantic energies. In your current condition you possess traits common among undead creatures.

Ability Score Increase

Your undead body no longer registers pain in the same way it did when it was alive, and your half mummified skin is tough and leathery. Your Constitution score increases by 2.

Age

The willful undead do not age. They remain gaunt, rotted, and somewhat mummified indefinitely. Any spell or effect that would cause you to age has no effect.

Alignment

While most undead creatures are evil and corrupt, you will likely adopt the alignment you were in life, even if you can't remember it.

Size

The willful undead can range from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet as though it were brightly illuminated, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You cannot discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language from your past life.

Undead Nature

As a member of the undead, you no longer need to breathe, eat, or drink. But as an aware, free-willed creature you must rest to recharge your body as well as your mind. Instead of sleeping, you enter an inactive state for 4 hours each day. You do not dream in this state; you are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal. While the willful undead remain motionless, they are indistinguishable from a normal corpse.

The powers that keep you animated heal you at a rate on par with the living and your hit points remain consistent with your class.

The willful undead are resistant to necrotic damage and poison. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed and feared, and magic cannot put you to sleep. The willful undead retain some of the vulnerabilities of undead creatures, such as a vulnerability to radiant damage and holy water, however, they are unaffected by the turn undead ability.

Undead Fortitude

If you take damage that reduces you to 0 hit points but does not kill you outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. This does not apply to damage taken from radiant, holy water, or from a critical hit. This feature may be used once per short rest.
