Homebrew Anago Species Details

Long ago, somewhere in the unknowable depths of Crearean waters, the Anago came into being. Anago display many similarities to that of an eel: slimy, snake-like bodies, pointed, fanged snouts, and long fins that extend along the length of their bodies. Unlike the common eel, however, Anago also boast fully capable arms and an intelligent, albeit vicious, sentience.

Most Anago prefer to live in deep waters, comfortably hidden from the chaos of life on land. Largely a solitary folk, it is rare to see more than two or three Anago together. Some of the more curious Anago journey to the surface to experience the wonders of a dry life, though many Creareans find their looks and presentation rather offputting and alarming. Such Anago are often quickly introduced to the criminal world once word of their deviousness and cunning gets out.

Anago can be as varied as there are species of eel. Subspecies of Anago include Electric, Moray, Cutthroat, Pelican, and Garden, but there are thought to be many more.

Anago Traits

All Anago share many qualities due to their Eelfolk heritage.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Anago mature at the same rate as humans but tend to live shorter lives.

Size

Anago can come in a variety of sizes. The smaller ones tend to be 3 to 4 feet tall and average 100 pounds, while the larger ones can be 5-6 feet tall and average 200 pounds. Your size can be either Small or Medium.

Speed

Anago are most adept at swimming underwater but can slither on land when needed. You have a Walking Speed of 25 feet and a Swim Speed of 40 feet. You have no legs or feet.

Darkvision

Thanks to your deep water heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Fanged Bite

Your fanged jaw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with your Fanged Bite, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Toxic Blood

The blood of an Anago is toxic to the average humanoid. A vial of your blood can be treated as a vial of Basic Poison (see Player's Handbook).

At the DM's discretion, you may extract 3 vials of blood from yourself every week. It takes one minute to properly prepare and extract the blood - blood shed from injuries is not pure enough to be effective. You may continue to extract vials of blood beyond 3, but will take 1 point of Exhaustion for every vial over 3. Seven days (one week) after the first vial is extracted, your blood replenishes itself and you may extract again without penalty.

Shocking Reaction

The spirit of the electric eel lives within all Anago. Anytime you are hit with a melee attack, your natural instincts activate, and you may choose to use your reaction to cast the Shocking Grasp cantrip on the attacker. This spell is cast using your Dexterity modifier, making the attack roll 1d20 + Dex Mod + Prof.

You cannot cast this cantrip any other way unless you have learned it from another source.

Eel's Cunning

You gain proficiency in the Stealth and Perception skills.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Aquan and Common.
