Homebrew Aaratica Species Details

A winged people who originated on the Elemental Plane of Air, aarakocra soar through the sky wherever they wander. Unfortunately, one tribe was lost to the Millennium Tundra where arctic winds rendered their wings useless. Rather than laying down to die, the tribe struggled, fought and survived. Over the generations, their bodies evolved to better suit the cold. Wings became flippers for aquatic mobility, bodies became bulkier and shorter to better suit the cold, and belly feathers to slip and slide more faster than a Gelatinous Cube.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid.

Life Span

Aaratica generally live to be 60 years old and reached adulthood in their 6th year.

Height and Weight

Aaratica typically stand 3 to 5 feet tall and weight anywhere from 25 to 75 lbs.

To roll randomly for height,  roll [roll]3d10+31[/roll] inches. This will be your height.  To roll randomly for weight,  roll [roll]6d12+15[/roll] pounds. This will be your weight.

Aaratica Traits

As an aaratica, you have the following racial traits.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid.

Size

Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your walking speed is 20 feet.

Swim

Because of your flippers, you have a swimming speed double your walking speed. This swimming speed is halved if you're wearing medium armor. You can’t use this swimming speed if you’re wearing heavy armor

Beak

You have a sharpened beak that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with it, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier piercing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Snow Spitter

Aaraticas, in the absence of stones, are able to develop their own gizzard stones made of ice, created by absorbing moisture in the air and freezing it in a compacted organ within their stomach. In times of stress, Aaraticas have been known to spit up this ice stones at their enemies in a panic, but with training, this can be a conscious decision rather than a frightened reflex.

Starting at 3rd level, you can spit out three ice stones at enemies. You may target one enemy multiple times or multiple enemies. Once you use this trait, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.

Make a ranged attack for each ice stone for an enemy within 15 feet of you, or 30 feet with disadvantage. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 ice damage + 1d6 bludgeoning damage.

Tobogganing

Unlike an Aaratica's feet, which are made to prevent slipping on the ice, their bellies are made for sliding on the ice. Sliding on their bellies, or Tobogganing, doubles movement speed

Torpedo

Speed is the name of the game. If the aaratica moves at least 10 feet straight toward a target (using Tobogganing or swim only) and then hits it with a beak attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 2d4 piercing damage.

Frost Feet

Many generations in the Millennium Tundra have caused Aaratica to develop an innate sense of balance on slippery ice. Aaratica ignore slippery ice as difficult terrain. This includes effects for spells, such as Sleet Storm.
