Homebrew Ancient Guardians Species Details

Oh... Yikes... A sentry is always a nuisance, no matter where it is or how many of them there are. — Yunobo (Breath of the Wild)

The Calamity

The Ancient Guardians were made by the technologically superior Sheikah race over ten thousand years ago. They were created in order to aid the Royal Family in fending off the inevitable return of Ganon. However, when calamity struck and Ganon returned with Hyrule at it's weakest, the Guardians were infected with malice by the fiend, turning them on the creatures of Hyrule. They tore through the cities and towns. It was a massacre.

Now, eons have passed and the Ancient Guardians have begun to be accepted by the Hyrulean settlements, reintegrating into society. They have taken up jobs and livelihood among the organic folk.

While none were named when they were created, they have since chosen their own names to grasp some form of humanity, making it easier for the organic tribes to recognize these Guardians as their own people.

There are still a few Guardian constructs left out and about in Hyrule who are affected by the malice of Ganon. They are few and far in between, but easy to spot, as their usual glowing lights assume the color of purple and pink.

Made for Combat

The Guardians were inherently designed for war and have natural tendencies and advantages when it comes to combat. As such, many of them have taken jobs in security or defenses, a few joining the military. Some believe this is done because they are still following their programming, their reason for being. Some pessimistically see it as an attempt to pull the wool over their eyes, merging with society before they can turn on them again.

Physical Traits

These Guardians were made with an entirely metal endoskeleton, while also having fake clothes carved and built over it, giving them a more full-featured appearance. Some of these carvings allow room for their lighting to seep out.

Ancient Guardians Traits

Your Ancient Guardian character has the following traits.

They Don't Make 'Em Like You No More

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
You also have proficiency with the History Skill and one weapon of your choice.

Guardian Beam

You can use your action to fire destructive energy from your eye with a range of 120ft. All creatures in a 10ft radius must make a DexSave. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution Mod + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 Force damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one.
The damage increases as you level up.

At 6th level, 3d6.
At 11th level, 4d6.
At 16th level, 5d6.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 1 and your Strength score increases by 2.

Age

These ancient guardians are older than time can remember.  They are ageless and show no signs of deterioration unless maintenance is not kept up.

Alignment

Most Guardians tend to be good natured, as designed, though they have been known to stray from there programming due to outside sources or internal problems.

Size

Your size is Medium. Most Guardians stand between 5 and 7 feet tall.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Ironhide Resilience

You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits.

  • You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
  • You are immune to disease.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You don’t need to sleep and don’t suffer the effects of exhaustion due to lack of rest, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Sentry's Rest

When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.

Integrated Protection

Your body has built-in defensive layers, which determine your armor class. You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you apply its bonus as normal.

You can alter your body to enter different defensive modes; each time you finish a long rest, choose one mode to adopt from the Integrated Protection table, provided you meet the mode’s prerequisite.

Mode Prerequisite Effect
Darkwood Core (unarmored) None 11 + your Dexterity modifier (add proficiency bonus if proficient with light armor)
Composite Plating (armor) Medium armor proficiency 13 + your Dexterity modifier (maximum of 2) + your proficiency bonus.
Heavy Plating (armor) Heavy armor proficiency 16 + your proficiency bonus; disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Hylian, Ancient Hylian, and one language of your choice, determined by where your Guardian has spent most of it's time since being reactivated.
