Homebrew Bunyip Species Details

The shy and quiet Bunyip are a rare species related to Lamias. They typically live near or in bodies of water, as they can move easily and silently through water. Their bodies are covered in soft, magical fur that seems to never get soggy or wet at all. Despite being carnivorous and monster-like, these creatures are extremely timid and cowardly, usually avoiding any creatures that are bigger than them, instead only attacking smaller wild animals by coiling their strong tails around them.

The Cautious Serpentine

Bunyip have most of their body covered in fluffy fur, along their tail, arms and even forming what seem to be two fluffy fox-like ears on their head. They can grow to be up to 13,1 feet long from head to tail tip, though in a normal position they are only up to 6,5 feet tall. Despite being quite strong, Bunyip are very cautious at all times, trying to avoid most people unless sure they are not a threat to their health.

Bunyip Traits

Bunyip owe most of their special traits to their strong tail and magical fur

Ability Score Increase

Bunyip have incredibly strong tails that can be used to constrain and grapple people by coiling themselves around them, granting them +1 to Strength and Constitution. They are also a rather intelligent race and get +1 to Intelligence

Fluffy coils

Using their strong tail, a Bunyip can easily coil herself around opponents, grappling them with the benefits of the Grappler trait. When grappling someone, the Bunyip still have both of their hands free.

Age

Bunyip grow up rather quickly, becoming fully mature at the age of 10. They usually live up to 50 years, with some having gotten as old as 80.

Aquatic Grace

The Bunyip's natural ability to thrive in the water allows them to see up to 120 feet under water and move up to 45 feet when submerged.

Mana-charged fur

Due to their fluffy body, most armors are unfit for a Bunyip, making it impossible for them to wear any armor at all. Their magic fur gives them a natural AC of 12 and Advantage on Spell Saving Throws though. Due to the quality of their fur, they are also resistant to Cold Damage.

Cautious nature

Due to their cautious nature and always being observant of their surroundings, the Bunyip have advantage on Perception and Investigation checks.

Languages

Bunyip can speak and understand Common and Undercommon. Most of them are unable to write or read though as they usually don't live in civilised enviroments.
