Homebrew Dhampir Half-elf Species Details

In more ways than one you straddle the line between two worlds- elf and human, alive and undead. It can be difficult to find your place amongst any of these groups you fit only partially within, but many of your kin find somewhere to belong.

Of Multiple Worlds

It can be difficult to place even normal Half-Elves as Human or Elven, and those that carry Vampiric blood are all the more difficult to pinpoint. Many mortals find Dhampir to be unsettling or assume them to be full Vampires, while full Vampires do not view them as one of their own. It is the same, often, amongst Elves and Humans- always seen as other. Still, there is no one way for Half-Elves or Dhampir to look or present. Some look more Human, some more Elven. Some pass entirely as fully living, and some are easily recognizable as some form of undead. Height, weight, eyes, ears, hair, skin- all vary hugely between individuals.

Half-Elf Variants

Some half-elves in Faerûn have a racial trait in place of the Skill Versatility trait. If your DM allows it, your half-elf character can forgo Skill Versatility and instead take the elf trait Keen Senses or a trait based on your elf parentage.

Dhampir Traits

On top of typical half-elf traits, you gain abilities from your Vampiric heritage or the Vampiric blood you've been infected with. These traits include a faster movement speed, the ability to spiderclimb, a natural bite weapon, and both a bat and mist form.

Dhampir Half-elf Traits

Your half-elf character has some qualities in common with elves and some that are unique to half-elves, along with special traits from being half vampire.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score and Strength score each increase by 2.

Age

Half-elves mature at the same rate humans do and reach adulthood around the age of 20. They live much longer than humans, however, often exceeding 180 years.

Size

Half-elves are about the same size as humans, ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

Deathless Nature

You don't need to breathe.

Darkvision

Thanks to your elf blood, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Spider Climb

You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. In addition, at 3rd level, you can move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, while leaving your hands free.

Vampire Bite

Your fanged bite is a natural weapon, which counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. You add your Constitution modifier, instead of your Strength modifier, to the attack and damage rolls when you attack with this bite. It deals 1d4 piercing damage on a hit. While you are missing half or more of your hit points, you have advantage on attack rolls you make with this bite.

  • When you attack with this bite and hit a creature that isn’t a Construct or an Undead, you can empower yourself in one of the following ways of your choice:
    • You regain hit points equal to the piercing damage dealt by the bite.
    • You gain a bonus to the next ability check or attack roll you make; the bonus equals the piercing damage dealt by the bite.
  • You can empower yourself with this bite a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Skill Versatility

You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish, and one extra language of your choice.

Vampiric Forms

You can transform into a bat or a cloud of mist once a day each. These forms last for up to an hour unless dismissed.
