Homebrew Angel Species Details

An angel may be a devout follower who ascended to greater heights through their prayer, or simply someone who was born as an angel with an inherent holiness in their soul, an angel is supposed to represent all good things. All angels are born with the intent to help people, although not all die with that intention. Some angels fall from grace, and those who do will have their brilliant white wings darken to a black or grey. But, fallen or not, angels do not always wish to display their wings that they are so easily identified by, so they can retract these wings into their backs. However, they can't do this while asleep, and regardless of whether their wings were retracted or otherwise, an angel's wings will be visible when sleeping.

Personality

An angel's personality is often righteous and good, (Any good alignment) and they are intent on helping people or acting for the greater good. However, unintentionally, this will commonly lead them to be seen in a "Holier than thou" light when presented with those who are more morally ambiguous. Of course, some angels instead find themselves trying to redeem those who are evil or simply in between good and bad. On the other hand, a fallen angel may assume all kinds of personalities, being liberated from their inherent holiness. But they are rarely as good as normal angels, as to fall in the first place an angel must commit an inherently wrong act. (Any alignment other than Lawful Good)

Appearance

An angel is usually similar to a human or elf in terms of overall appearance, but, some angels have been reported to appear anywhere from orcish to that of a plasmoid. Their most identifiable trait is their typically quite large, brilliant feather-leaden wings. Most angels only have one set of wings, but some more powerful angels may have even more, typically up to four at most. An angel is born with wings that are pure and white, but fallen angels will have grey or black wings, the darker the colour of the wings the more evil the fallen angel is. (Of course, you may have Vantablack wings and still be a Neutral Good fallen angel if you wish, but only fallen angels have darkened wings.)

Angel Names

Angel names are typically somewhat unique, and emanate a certain feeling of higher powers. (It is recommended you use the names of angels from any religion of choice from the real world, but feel free to make up your own.) Examples may include Gabriel, Azazel, Metatron, Wormwood, Yadathan, Zephon, etc. 

Lifespan

An angel's lifespan is large, and they typically live anywhere from 1000 to 1500 years of life, and it is not uncommon for powerful angels to become ageless and immortal. An angel reaches full maturity at around 200 years old. 200-500 is approximately considered an earlier adult, 500-800 is middle-aged, and 800+ is old. An angel who achieves agelessness will (usually) regress in age to appear more youthful, anywhere from the 200-500 year range on average. 

Holy Symbol

As a symbol of holiness and goodness, an angel is inherently trustworthy to religious people. Whenever speaking to a creature who is faithful to the religion of the angel's god, the angel will have advantage on all Charisma-based checks involving that creature, assuming the creature knows they are speaking to an angel of their religion. On the other hand, an angel will have disadvantage against Charisma-based checks involving creatures that denounce the gods. A fallen angel will have disadvantage on Charisma-based checks involving creatures that follow the religion of that angel's god, but advantage on Charisma-based checks involving creatures that denounce the gods. 

 

Controversial holiness

Angels accept everyone who seeks them out, but not everyone likes them, and they don't like everyone. They often find themselves being talked about as if they weren't even there. 

Dwarves. "Dwarves are very greedy with their love of gold and other shiny metals. But, they are very steadfast in their beliefs and that is worthy of praise."

Tieflings. "Tieflings, despite their experiences--or perhaps because of them--are often quite abrasive towards me whenever I meet them. Despite that, I hold no grudges against them as a whole as when you look closer, they are no different than any other race, excluding their appearance."

Humans. "Humans are difficult to place. Some of them will do the most vile things you've ever seen, and others will act even better than some angels I know. The only definite thing about them is their determination to greatness despite their short lifespans and lack of special traits."

 

 

 

                                                                                             

Angel Traits

Angels have traits from their unique origins.

Wings

Your wings may be extended or retracted from your back as a bonus action. While your wings are extended, you gain a fly speed of 30ft. per set of wings you have, and have bonuses or disadvantages against certain creatures as described above. Should your wings but cut off, you will regrow them on a long rest, but it is extremely painful.

Extra Wings

All angels start with two wings but may gain more depending on their power. If you decide to stick with two wings rather than gaining more, you can still gain the bonuses to fly speed. You may gain more wings either by level or the DM may grant you extra wings for great acts aligning with your character. The levels you may gain another set of wings are: 5th, 10th, and 15th. The DM granting extra wings does not override the level-based wings, but, if you (for example) earned a second pair before level 5, you will not be able to get a third pair at level 5.

You are a medium-sized celestial.

Speed

You have 30ft. of walking speed and 30ft. of flying speed.

Ability Score Increase

An angel gains a +2 to Charisma, and a +1 to a stat of your choice.

Languages

As an angel, you may read, write, and speak in Common, Celestial, and one other language of your choice.

Brightvision

As an angel, your eyes are most used to very bright conditions. You suffer no negative effects from extremely bright lights. You have a much harder time seeing in dim light, even more so than creatures without any special vision.
