Homebrew Automata Species Details
Automata are elegantly build wooden constructs, being employed as servants and children's entertainers. Though they may seem like shambling messes of wood and magical influence, they are known to be especially loyal and knowledgeable record keepers, as the magic that binds them together serves to slow down the aging of the timber that makes them. As the Automata are quite susceptible to perishing due to the elements and lack of care, a way for them to be endlessly resurrected was developed. As long as even the smallest splinter remains, a soul of an Automata may never really perish.
The Automata are diligent practitioners of self-care, taking part in engraving details and modifying their body to fit their needs. As their body decays, they add new lumber to their body and their magic merges the new wood with their body, spiritually revitalizing them in addition to repairing them.
Automata Traits
Darkvision, Enduring Soul, Repairable Design, Puppet Performer, Puppet's RestCreature Type
You are a Construct.
Size
You are Small or Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 35 feet.
Darkvision
Magic powers the sight of Automata. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. Notably, you can discern color in darkness.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language.
Puppet's Rest
Automata do not require sleep and instead integrate changes and additions to their body when they rest. When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in a motionless state. In this state, you appear inert and virtually indistinguishable from a soulless Automata body, but you are fully conscious and able to see and hear. If new wood has been added to mend damage, it will fully merge with the body in this period.
Puppet Performer
You gain proficiency in Performance and with Carpenter's tools. Whenever you make an Charisma (Performance) check related to puppeteering or feigning death, you add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.
Repairable Design
If the Mending spell is cast on you, you can spend a Hit Die, roll it, and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll plus your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 hit point). This effect also works if Carpenter's tools are used on you. In addition, you benefit from several spells that preserve life but that normally don't affect Constructs, such as Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Mass Cure Wounds, Mass Healing Word, and Spare the Dying.
Enduring Soul
As long as a part of an Automata remains after death, they will always have a willingness to return to life. An Automata can be resurrected regardless of how much time has passed since their death, but the cost of procuring a body for the soul is not factored into the material cost of the resurrection. A bare-minimum body for an Automata costs 500gp and can be crafted over a month of labour. A body that has all of its previous features requires an extra 100gp for each level the Automata had in life.
