Homebrew Crustalith Species Details
Description
Crustaliths are highly rare, capable of reason but not social creatures. They prefer solitude and live in isolation. They are incredibly resilient and strong, but move slowly and cannot wield typical weapons, except for specially forged ones, which are very expensive.
Appearance and Origins
Crustaliths' origins are unknown, but they likely evolved from some undiscovered marine creature. Their appearance is distinctive; their bodies resemble large, stone-like shells from which protrude three pairs of legs. At the rear, they have a short tail covered in shell from above. Their heads are small, topped with a shell, and feature two large black eyes on stalk-like protrusions. In the front, they possess four limbs: one pair of small appendages with a single spine at the end, and one pair of robust, large claws encased in shell. They are typically gray or black, but variations in color include red, orange, and white.
Crustalith Traits
Crustaliths are formidable and solitary beings, known for their incredible resilience and strength. They possess unique adaptations and abilities suited to their rocky, shell-like bodies. As Crustaliths, players gain bonuses to Constitution and a choice of Strength or Dexterity, along with natural burrowing and swimming abilities.Natural Resilience
Crustaliths are renowned for their innate durability and resilience, traits that have evolved from their rocky, shell-like bodies. This natural resilience grants them exceptional toughness, allowing them to endure harsh conditions and physical challenges with ease. Their Constitution score increases by 2, reflecting their robust physiology. Additionally, you can choose to increase either your Strength or Dexterity score by 1, further enhancing your physical prowess.
Speed
Crustaliths, with their formidable size and robust exoskeletons, possess a base walking speed of 25 feet. Their heavy, stone-like shells and muscular legs dictate a deliberate pace, emphasizing strength over swiftness. Crustaliths navigate terrain with a steady gait, their natural resilience allowing them to withstand physical challenges with ease. Despite their ponderous movement, Crustaliths are capable of precise and calculated actions, making them formidable in battles requiring endurance and steadfast resolve.
Size
Crustaliths are medium-sized creatures, standing between 4 to 5 feet tall on average. Their bodies are encased in a dense, stone-like shell that resembles natural rock formations, providing them with both protection and a distinctive appearance. Despite their sturdy build, Crustaliths exhibit surprising agility and flexibility, navigating their environments with ease thanks to their powerful legs and adapted physiology. Their shell, though heavy, enhances their resilience and allows them to withstand physical challenges in their rugged habitats.
Age
Crustaliths mature relatively quickly, reaching adulthood by the age of 20. However, what truly distinguishes them is their incredibly long lifespan, often spanning well over 500 years. This longevity grants Crustaliths a unique perspective on life, allowing them to accumulate extensive knowledge and wisdom over the centuries. They are known for their patience and resilience, shaped by centuries of experiences and challenges in their solitary existence. Crustaliths approach life with a deep understanding of the passage of time, often seeing events unfold with a perspective that few other races can match.
Alligment
Crustaliths are creatures of neutrality, often preferring solitude and tranquility in their solitary habitats. They live by a simple code: as long as they are left undisturbed, they pose no threat to others. However, their patience is not limitless. When provoked or their territories are encroached upon, Crustaliths unleash a fierce and relentless defense. They are known for their swift and merciless retribution against those who dare to harm them or their homes. This dichotomy of peaceful coexistence and brutal retaliation defines their alignment, making them formidable adversaries and cautious allies.
Shell Strike
Crustaliths possess a formidable ability to strike with their sturdy carapace, delivering a potent blow in melee combat. As an action, they can unleash a forceful strike using their shell against a creature within 5 feet. The attack inflicts 1d8 bludgeoning damage plus the Crustalith's Strength modifier. Additionally, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + Strength modifier + proficiency bonus) or be stunned until the start of their next turn.
Burrowing Assault
Crustaliths harness their natural affinity for burrowing to surprise and attack their foes with a powerful assault. As an action, a Crustalith can burrow underground and emerge beneath a target enemy up to 80 feet away. Upon surfacing, the Crustalith makes a melee weapon attack with its shell, dealing 1d10 bludgeoning damage and forcing the target to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target is stunned until the start of its next turn. The Crustalith must have enough space to burrow and surface in its chosen location, and it cannot burrow through solid stone or metal.
