Homebrew Dracotuar Species Details

These were the stories an ancient, but rare race. Destroyed by the racism of humanity for being "monsters" and "abominations" they have learned to survive quietly and cherish the arts and culture of their ancestors.

Dracotaurs are one of the oldest of the races, early to arrive on the world scene.  Perhaps it is because of their shorter lives compared to their Draconic cousins that they strive to achieve as much as they can in the years they are given. They also feel that they have to contribute to society the way their ancestors did, so they build their mighty empires on the foundation of culture and art. They are the original innovators, the achievers, and the pioneers of the worlds.

A Broad Spectrum

Dracotuars are more physically diverse than other common races. On their draconic body, their shoulder reaches 3-4 feet in height, and at their humanoid shoulder, they are typically 5-6.5 feet tall. They typically weigh 400-600 pounds. Their human skin shades range from nearly black to very pale, and hair colors from black to blond (curly, kinky, or straight); males can have facial hair and chest hair that is sparse or thick.

They reach adulthood in their mid to late twenties and live for upwards of 200 years.

They have scaled forearms that match the color of their body and 5-foot long griffin tails that are covered in fine, smooth, snake-like scales with a tuft of soft hair at the end that matches their normal hair color.

Their scale color is determined from the influence of their ancestors and parents. Certain colors will grant them different levels in society.

When born they are a solid black, with an oil slick finish. When they age and hit adulthood they gain their "true colors". When they have about 25 years left in their life they will turn a white silver color.

If you hit adulthood and your colors don't change, you remain oil slick, then you will be excommunicated for fear of bringing bad luck to their society.

Variety in All Things

Due to having to move around a lot during what they call "The Shadow Era", they have learned to quickly adapt. They build cities to last for the ages, and culture to last through the generations. They live fully in the present— while honoring what their ancestors left behind —but also plan for the future, striving to leave a lasting legacy. They rely on art to pass their culture on. They live for bright colors and to spread joy among each other. They have humble homes, decorated with bright pottery and tile murals.

The Shadow Era

When this race was still bright-faced and young to existing on Eaerth, they came across Humans. They wanted nothing more than to create allies, to gain new culture, and to help benefit each other. However, the humans didn't see it this way. They saw them as "monsters" and "abominations" just because of the way they looked.  They attacked, destroying thousands of years of art and buildings. They killed every Dracotaur they came across, even though they refused to fight back at first. Eventually, the Dracotaurs realized that the only way to survive was to build an army and fight back.

35 years of fighting, 9,876 Dracotaurs killed in battle, to finally gain a semblance of peace. They became servants of humans for many years, it was the only way to guarantee their survival. Eventually, they were able to build their population up enough to move. When they moved they developed a magic shadow that covers over their cities that makes it invisible to the human eye.

Names and Ethnicities

Having so much more variety than other cultures, humans as a whole have no typical names. Some human parents give their children names from other languages, such as Dwarvish or Elvish (pronounced more or less correctly), but most parents give names that are linked to their region’s culture or to the naming traditions of their ancestors.

The material culture and physical characteristics of humans can change wildly from region to region. In the Forgotten Realms, for example, the clothing, architecture, cuisine, music, and literature are different in the northwestern lands of the Silver Marches than in distant Turmish or Impiltur to the east—and even more distinctive in far-off Kara-Tur. Human physical characteristics, though, vary according to the ancient migrations of the earliest humans, so that the humans of the Silver Marches have every possible variation of coloration and features.
