Fragile Wings

Butterfly and moth wings are made of thin layers of chitin, the same hardened protein that makes up their outside body. They are also covered with thousands of tiny scales that lend color to the wings. The wings are strengthened by a system of veins. The wings have to be strong enough to support the body in the air, but still flexible enough for flight movements.

Butterflies and moths don't actually need the scales to fly, but their wings are very delicate and if you handle them enough to rub the scales off, you'll probably also damage the wings in the process.

Lowlight Vision

Moths can adapt to different light levels by changing how quickly their brains process visual information. For example, they can slow down their visual processing to track flowers, or expose their eyes to light for longer periods of time. Moths can also dart, dodge, and hover in near darkness.

Torpor

Torpor is characterized by a reduction in metabolism, heart rate, respiration, and body temperature, and can also include partial or total insensibility and mental and motor inactivity. Torpor helps animals conserve energy and survive in unfavorable conditions, such as when food is scarce or temperatures are low.
