Homebrew Awakened Shadow Species Details

What if one faithful morning, you woke up, and realized that your shadow had disappeared? Where did it go? How did this happen?

There's a rare phenomenon where a shadow might come to life, by magic or some other circumstance, awakened after many years of following closely behind a creature, person, or object.

An awakened Shadow will resemble a dark, transparent figure that many might mistake for a sleep paralysis demon or an unseen person behind a corner. They weigh nothing and aren't solid, but their sentience causes them to feel pain, which means they can indeed die.

When a shadow awakens, it probably doesn't remember much of what it had been present for before it gained sentience. Maybe it picked up on a language, a skill or two, perhaps a long forgotten method of doing certain things.
