Homebrew Daraven Species Details
An exceedingly rare species, Daraven - or “Half-Drakes” in the common tongue - are born from a male Dragonborn and a female from a different species. Most often humanoid in nature.
It is normal for young Half-Drakes to struggle with controlling their Dragon lineage. In fact, it is the number one reason so many die before they come of age. However, if one can master their bloodline, they gain access to a raw, carnal power similar to that of a Dragon. But, this also forced the majority to develop horns, tails, and scales across their body. In rarer cases, more potent bloodlines can cause reptilian pupils and even wings.
Due to their unique appearance, as well as their inherit brutality, Half-Drakes are often falsely accused of being monsters. Therefore, Half-Drakes often isolate themselves from society. Some brave the perils of civilization by utilizing illusionary magic to blend it, while others have the good grace of being accepted by either their mothers or fathers kin. However, the vast majority go their whole lives without meeting another like them, and they likewise receive much animosity from other races.
Daraven Traits
Daraven are predominately influenced by their fathers bloodlines regardless of how powerful or noble their mothers bloodlines may be. As a result, the majority of Abilities granted are similar to that of a Dragonborn. Otherwise, there are a few aspects that the Player can customize.Scale-Bound
Much like the buffs associated with a Dragonborn’s “Draconinc Ancestry”, players will have a specific type of damage resistance determined by the dragon type associated with their bloodline. But no breath weapons available.
Black and Copper Dragon Lineage gives Acid Resistance. Green Dragon Lineage grants Poison Resistance. Blue and Bronze Dragon Lineage gives Lightning Resistance. Brass and Gold Dragon Lineage gives Fire Resistance. White and Silver Dragon Lineage give Ice Resistance.
Half-Drakes are naturally given +2 Dexterity on account of their Dragonborn blood. They receive an extra +2 Constitution due to the immense effort it takes their bodies to survive their first few years of life. Also receive +1 on one extra ability check due to their mixed blood. They can be leveled up on DM’s discretion at level 4, 8, and 10. This normally means that the player can chose one of the boosted traits to “level up” by +1.
Resonance
Grants Half-Drakes a heightened senses buff. It also gifts them ability to understand minuscule changes in body-language.
Heightened senses allows for +2 Perception Checks in environments/territories that the player is familiar with. If they are arriving to a new area, and they are not familiar with the environment (I.e. Grew up in forests but suddenly travels to desert), buffs drops to +1. If the player’s senses are compromised in any way, then Perception drops to +0.
Heightened ability to read body language gives +1 Perception only in situations where Half-Drakes are suspicious of or perceive someone as an enemy.
Granted at first level, but can be leveled up at level 2, 6, and 10. First level grants +2 Perception. Remaining level “power-ups” are allowed at DM’s discretion and equate to another +1 in perception at every level.
Monstrous
Half-Drakes earn the status of “Monster” every time they enter a heavily populated area unchaperoned or without a disguise. Members of the populous must be sentient and have an intelligence greater than 3. Thus, some areas that are included in this evaluation are cities, villages, dungeons, etc. To circumvent their unfavorable reputation, Half-Drake players must perform a “Shapechange”; a spell that all Half-Drakes are taught early on as a means to control their DragonsBlood.
However, this spell runs on the power derived from Dragons Blood. Or, in other words, their own blood. This means that the spell “Shapechange” can only last maximum eight hours. Afterward, the charm that powers the spell runs out of fuel and the illusion camouflaging the Player is undone. This process triggers the action “Monstrous”. To fix it, players who do not take time to refill their charm beforehand must initiate a saving throw immediately.
If the throw fails, then the following may happen:
(1) If player is in a populated area, they acquire the status of “Monster” and local enforcers begin attacking them ONLY if they are by themselves, or their party doesn’t vouch for them. This will continue until the Player is outside the limits of the populated area - despite whether they were able to fix their charm in that amount of time.
(2) In an unpopulated area, no status change is invoked. However, they remain at risk of acquiring the “Monster” status until their charm is fixed.
Half-Blood
Despite the sheer influence of their Dragon lineage, Half-Drakes are able to inherit many qualities associated with their Mothers Race. These features are difficult to ascertain at birth, but they usually go beyond simple Mana Capacity and Personality.
Size: Half-Drakes of Diluted Blood tend to be smaller and closer to the size of their mother’s race. Half-Drakes of Potent Blood tend to be closer to their father’s build, which is normally over 6 feet and 200 pounds.
Speed: A Half-Drakes Base Walking speed is 30ft. They are unable to fly and are poor swimmers due to their heavy scales.
Age: Half-Drakes have significantly variable ages depending on what their bloodline is mixed with. Usually, their age range will be the average of both their parents expected age range.
Language: Half-Drakes are able to fluently speak, write, and read Common and Draconic Language. They also have the ability to choose one more language to be proficient in.
