Homebrew Awakened Bear Species Details

They say when you encounter a bear in the wild, you should play dead until it loses interest in you and goes away on its own. Let me tell you, this will not work on one of these.

There could be many reasons an animal might be awakened: a spell, divine intervention, or a cruel joke by some apprentice mage. Whatever the reason, it was likely against their will. Intelligence can be quite a burden. Especially to those who did not have it before.

Bears on their own are formidable fighters. Giving them an intelligent mind to be able to use it effectively makes them powerful warriors.

Solitary Nature

Bears do not typically spend much time in groups. They prefer solitary lifestyles except when it is time to mate. For this reason, Awoken Bears tend to lean toward being Rangers and Barbarians. If there is enough incentive, they may be convinced to travel in a group. However, they may still stick to themselves as much as possible.

Ferocious Protector

Despite their solitary nature, should an Awoken Bear find something or someone it loves or cares for it will fight ferociously, and often to the death, to protect them. If it finds itself in an adventuring group, they will likely be at the front lines to keep the attention off of their weaker comrades. The bonds they form with others are not easily broken.
