Homebrew Camazotz Species Details
Stemming from giant bats that emerged from the Underdark, Camozotz appear as humanoids with leather skin, pointy ears, and sharp teeth. Camozotz have a leathery span of skin that runs from their arms to their side, which they can fly short distances with.
Like bats, Camozotz are able to use echolocation to navigate the darkness, identify objects, and hunt prey. Due to their time spent in the surface world, Camozotz have developed eyes that aren't as sensitive to light as their predecessors. Although, many still choose to live in shade for comfort purposes.
Your Camozotz may be nocturnal, but most Camozotz have learned to resist their urge to sleep during the day to better fit within society.
Blindness and Books
Being effectively blind, the Camazotz developed two forms of written language. One is used for long-ranged legibility while the other needs to be felt to be understood. The latter is akin to braille. It's often used in scholarly tomes and scrolls, contracts, and other important documents where detail is essential. The former can be read by Camazotz from a distance as it uses textures in lieu of characters. The textures convey simple ideas individually, though they can be stringed together to form more complex words, for example, feathers are often used to represent wind, the world above, or height, however, feathers followed by fur is read as "flying creature" or "winged animal."
Bureaucratic entrepreneurs
The Camazotz are well known for being astute traders, and Camazotz cities are often a hub for trading goods and services. That is primarily the reason why Camazotz seen in the world outside Eserka are often travelling merchants, seeking opportunities.
Creating Your Character
If you create a Camozotz character, follow these additional rules during character creation.
Camazotz Traits
You have the following racial traits.Creature Type
You are a Humanoid.
Size
You are Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 ft.
Echolocation
By emitting virtually inaudible clicks with your tongue, you can perceive your surroundings without relying on sight. You gain blindsight out to a radius of 30 feet as long as you are not deafened.
Winged Arms
You have 30 feet of flight speed if you are not wearing medium or heavy armor, but you must end your turn on the ground. While flying in this way, your hands are unavailable to hold objects, make melee weapon attacks, or perform somatic components for casting spells.
Screech
As a bonus action, you can let out an ear piercing screech in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the creature takes 1d8 thunder damage and becomes deafened until the end of your next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and is not deafened. This damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).
After you use your screech, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
One with the Night
You evolved from nocturnal hunters, you gain proficiency in the stealth skill and advantage on survival checks that rely on hearing.
