Homebrew Baabaa Species Details

After all, the wool of a black sheep is just as warm.-Ernest Lehman

Among the rolling hills and golden fields they call home, the baabaa enjoy simple lives in quiet villages. These anthropomorphic sheepfolk raise their villages far from other peoples but they welcome passing travelers and new neighbors with warmth. A cultural emphasis on gardening and artistry, combined with their hospitality, has given outsiders the perception of a peaceful people leading idyllic lives—a perception that is, largely, accurate. Baabaa make big life decisions based on the content and interpretations of their dreams. When a baabaa becomes an adventurer, it is most likely because they have repeatedly or intensely dreamed of far off places and daring action. Although risk taking is something the baabaa are generally averse to, and frown upon, a baabaa pursuing their dreams always gets the blessing of their family and village elders.

A Sheepish People

A typical baabaa stands between three and a half to five feet tall and weighs anywhere from 60 to 140 lbs. Baabaa with particularly unruly wool coats may appear larger and weigh more as a result of their voluminous hair. Most baabaa have coats of white, brown, silver, or black, with dark blue and light red coats being less common. Like their distant animal cousins, baabaa’s wool coats don’t stop growing no matter how big they get so baabaa tend to be meticulous about regular shearing. Some baabaa develop horns that curve into a spiral as they enter puberty. Despite a common misconception amongst outsiders, the development of such horns is in no way related to the baabaa’s sex. Despite it being a common misconception amongst baabaa, an individual’s horns in no way indicate an individual is particularly stubborn or willful.

Born Dreamers

In a time primordial, when there was no difference between waking and dreaming, Minoa and Eloc discovered love. No one had heard of it before. The two were inseparable for time untold, until a conflict between them ended their romance and sundered the border between waking and dreaming. The details of their falling out vary by the teller, but for one reason or another the dispute proved irreconcilable. Despite whatever hurt had passed between them, each dreamt of the other every night and each dream version of Eloc and Minoa manifested in the waking world as a baabaa. Dreams continue to have a central importance in baabaa culture and mythology. Baabaa consider it impolite to greet someone without inquiring about their recent dreams. A cursory response is acceptable among acquaintances but true friends are expected to spend hours dissecting the metaphors and allegories of one anothers’ dreams. Professional dream interpreters are highly sought after among the baabaa and are considered critical for one’s ongoing emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Baabaa Unique Traits

In addition to the above traits, choose three variable traits from below.

Counting Sheep. You can cast the sleep spell without expending a spell slot or providing material components. When you do, you add a bonus to the spell’s dice roll equal to twice your level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell when you cast it with this trait (choose when you select this trait). Once you cast the spell using this trait without expending a spell slot, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest. You can also cast this spell using spell slots you have of the appropriate level. When you cast the spell in this way, you do not add a bonus to the dice roll called for by the spell.

Flight Instincts. You can use a bonus action on each of your turns to take the Dash or Disengage action.

Get the Horns. You have curved horns that are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier. If the creature is one size category larger than you or smaller, you can instead choose to deal no damage and knock the creature prone or push it 5 feet.

Jumping Over Fences. Your jump distance is tripled.

Wake Up. When you fail a saving throw against being charmed, frightened, or unconscious you can use your reaction to reroll the die. You must use the new roll. If the new result causes you to succeed on the saving throw, you can’t use this trait again until you finish a short or long rest.

Wooly Coat. You have resistance to cold damage and advantage on ability checks and saving throws made to endure nonmagical cold climates.
