Homebrew Chiburr Species Details

"It has been many years since I last set eyes on that strange land and its people. My crew and I had weathered through one hell of a storm that forced us so far off course our navigator had no hope of figuring out were we were. The land we found matched nothing on the maps, and as we trekked inland looking for food we found ourselves in an ancient world. It was there that I first saw the chiburr gracefully gliding through the trees above us. They were curious of us, and took us to a small village built in the tallest tree i have ever seen. It was a short exchange, they knew our language but not our cultures. We told them that we were lost and could not find our way home. It was actually their shaman that gave us the bearing to sail homeward. I have tried for many years to find my way back to that continent, but its almost like it doesn't want to be found"

— David Harden, Captain of the Windward Patriot

Hailing from a strange and distant land, adventuring chiburr are sugar glider like humanoids driven by curiosity and wanderlust that leads them from the primordial forests of their upbringing. They can often be found travelling the open road were they are free to enjoy themselves and explore the world. While they may occasionally pass through cities, it is a rare sight to see a chiburr settle down in a city as the clustered, dirty streets provide little comfort for them.

Natural Explorers

Born among the primordial forests, most chiburr remain in their distant homelands within tight nit social communities. They are expert hunters that glide between the trees and ambush their prey from above. But they are also incredible explorers flying between trees at incredible speeds and capable of crossing canyons and ravines that would pose as impassable boundaries to normal adventurers.

While the chiburr cannot fly naturally, they are at home in the skies. As such many chiburr seek to obtain their own methods of flight through magic or find ways to aid in gliding. It becomes a common ritual among the communities to teach spells like Levitate and Fly to individuals of magical persuasions. Almost all chiburr are taught the Jump spell from a young age to allow them to achieve jumps to gliding heights from the ground.

Homelands

The coastlines of the southern continents are dominated by primordial forests that were left untouched for thousands of years by the destructive forces of many of the humanoid races. Due to the ancient nature these forests are dominated by enormous trees that sometimes tower hundreds of meters into the air. These forests are the home of the chiburr, and it is among these towering trees that they feel the most free. The immense cliffs that also dot the landscape become perfect perches for journeys of immense lengths as the chiburr glide above the canopy.

Many chiburr follow the religions of old. Each community has a cleric and a shaman that guides them. The clerics learn the teachings of the nature gods (such as Silvanus for Forgotten Realms settings or Obad-hai for Greyhawk settings that ensures the community remains in harmony with the beings of the forest. The shamans are taught a much more primal connection to nature, and act as the voice of the fey spirits that call the primordial forests home. Many even go so far as to make pacts with the Seelie Court of Fey so they can communicate with the fey beyond the material plane.

CHIBURR BACKGROUNDS

Backgrounds that are most appropriate for chiburr include the outlander, the hermit, and the sage.

The small social communities that chiburr build are remote and secluded, and it is rare for a chiburr to leave these communities. When creating a chiburr consider why they left these communities, or potentially why their lineage left these communities. As they are social creatures, it is not usual for a chiburr to leave a community in search of other races after encountering them in the forests.
