Homebrew Awakened Cat Species Details

An awakened cat is a being created and sustained by magic. Perhaps a wizard was seeking a companion, or an experiment went awry, or perhaps some dark ritual bound a humanoid soul into the body of a cat. Whatever the reason, you radiate faint Transmutation magic.

If you are subjected to any effect that suppresses magic, you must make an Intelligence saving throw with a DC equal to 10 + the effect's spell level. On a failure, you revert to your former state, being temporarily stripped of all conscious thought. You can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of your turns. Should you leave the area of effect, its duration expire, or you succeed on the saving throw, you awaken with only a hazy memory of the time spent under the magic's influence. If you successfully save against the effect, you are immune to that instance of the effect for the next 24 hours.

Fur and Claw

When not speaking, you are indistinguishable from a normal cat. Most people pay you little mind unless you give them reason to.

You have paws instead of hands. You can manipulate simple objects with your paws, but can't use items that require opposable thumbs. At your DM's discretion, you can have custom weaponry or armor made to fit your form.

You can perform somatic components with your tail.

Though you have newfound intelligence, you still have a cat's body. The hit dice gained from your class are reduced by one die size. I.e. a d12 becomes a d10, d10➔d8, d8➔d6, and d6➔d4.

Awakened Cat Traits

As an Awakened Cat, you have the following racial traits

Age:

Unless magically extended, Awakened Cats have the same lifespan as a normal cat. Cats reach maturity at around 1 year and can live up to 20 years.

Alignment:

Most cats are chaotic neutral, doing whatever they fancy and showing little care for the world around them. However, they will sometimes form strong bonds with those they deem worthy.

Size:

The average cat is 2-2.5 feet long, including the tail, and weighs 8-12 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed:

Your base walking speed is 40 feet, and you have a climbing speed of 30 feet.

Darkvision:

Your eyes are naturally adapted to low light. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Cat's Talent:

You have proficiency in the Perception and Stealth skills

Sharp Claws:

Your claws are natural weapons. Your unarmed attacks deal 1d4 + Strength slashing damage and benefit from the finesse property.

Cat's Grace:

Your base AC equals 12 + your Dexterity modifier. You halve all fall damage, and you do not require a 10 foot running start to leap your maximum distance.

You can attempt to hide even when you are obscured only by a creature that is at least one size larger than you.

Therapeutic Purring:

During a short rest, you can curl up and purr, allowing you to heal from one additional Hit Die without needing to expend it. You can also choose up to one creature that you trust to snuggle up to and share this benefit with. This trait can only be used once per short rest.

Languages:

You can speak, read, and write Common. Additionally, you can communicate with other felines in their own language, as if using the speak with animals spell.

Crystal Necklace

You own a magical crystal necklace that allows you to better interact with the world around you. This necklace was gifted to you by your former wizard owner or was acquired in your travels. The crystal serves as a spell focus, and you are considered to be "holding" it when it is worn around your neck. The necklace allows you to cast Mage Hand.

Additionally, when casting a spell, you can instantaneously summon your mage hand to perform somatic components or manipulate material components. If summoned in this way, the mage hand disappears at the end of your turn.

Creature Type

You are a beast.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 3, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 1. Your Strength score decreases by 4.
