Homebrew Crustal Folk Species Details

Description: Crustal Folk are a race of hermit crabs with a unique and vibrant culture. Standing about 4 to 5 feet tall, their hard, exoskeletons shimmer with iridescent colors, reflecting their diverse habitats ranging from tropical reefs to arid desert shores. Each Crustal Folk carries a large, ornate shell that serves as both armor and home, often decorated with intricate patterns and symbols of their personal achievements or clan affiliations.

Society: Crustal Folk society is organized around the concept of "shell clans," where status and respect are closely tied to the adornment and condition of one's shell. They are known for their intricate craftsmanship and communal living, often working together to create beautiful, functional items from natural resources. Their communities are typically found in coastal or near-coastal areas, and they are renowned for their seafaring skills and trade networks.

Abilities: Crustal Folk possess a natural armor-like exoskeleton that grants them resilience against physical damage. They can retract into their shells for protection, gaining +5 ac for 3 turns or till they leave while being ignored by monsters that fail an intelligence check. Their dexterous claws allow them to manipulate objects with precision, and they have an innate affinity for water-based magic (+3 to hit with water magic) and environmental adaptation, making them excellent survivalists (+1 to survival in aquatic and sand).

Role in Adventure: Crustal Folk can serve as both allies and adversaries in a campaign. They might be encountered as guardians of ancient underwater ruins, skilled merchants trading rare goods, or as protectors of their coastal homes against encroaching threats. Their unique blend of resilience, craftsmanship, and cultural richness provides a variety of opportunities for interaction and adventure.
