Homebrew Cecaelia Species Details
Descendants of the ancients that live in the uncharted, unexplored depths of the sea, Cecaelia most resemble octopi but calling one that is a dangerous idea. What is more frightening than encountering a descendant of a Kraken? A cecaelia would ask such a question to you, and you best be prepared to answer it.
Cecaelia Traits
As a Cecaelia, you have the following traits.Age
Cecaelia reach adulthood by the age of 10. They age quickly, rarely living longer than 70 years.
Alignment
The cecaelia's intense self-reliance, nomadic lifestyle, and preference for small social structures lead them to be chaotic neutral in alignment. However, despite their reputation, good aligned cecaelia are just as common as the others.
Size
A cecaelia's torso averages 2-3 feet, though their tentacles reach 8 to 10 feet in length. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 15 feet. You also have a swimming speed of 30 feet.
Amphibious
You can breathe both air and water and move freely in water.
Tentacles
Your lower body consists of a crown of eight tentacles, the bottom of which is covered in a layer of soft hydrostatic discs. You may manipulate these discs to create a suction powerful enough to suspend you out of water, as well as grip opponents with frightening strength. Your tentacles are strong enough to support your weight and provide movement on land, albeit a bit slower than surface-dwelling races.
Though prehensile enough to manipulate objects, your tentacles do not possess the manual dexterity or speed to wield weapons effectively. You gain advantage on Athletics (Climbing) checks and on checks to either initiate or end a grapple. You may take the Use an Object action as a bonus action on your turn and can do so at a range of up to 10 feet.
Phenotypic Variance
The varied environments within the world's oceans have given rise to several phenotypic variants of cecaelia, including: tropical cecealia, open ocean, and deep cecaelia. However, these cecaelia often vary by physical look only.
Hydrostatic Skeleton
The internal skeleton of your upper torso is made of a flexible, cartilaginous tissues rather than bone. Your lower body and tentacles are composed of vessels that can be filled and emptied of fluid, allowing you to stretch, manipulate, expand, and contract your entire body. You gain resistance to bludgeoning damage.
In addition, you may squeeze through spaces up to two size categories smaller than you with no penalties (Tiny). However, equipped weapons, armor, and items must also be able to fit through this space to use this ability.
