Homebrew Crown of Thorns Species Details

You are a construct - a living magic item of ages past. A crown that has the ability to possess the bodies upon which it is placed. Gain the speeds of the creature you possess.

Crown of Thorns Traits

Your magical nature gives you certain abilities

Possession

The vines of the crown attempt to root into the mind of a nearby humanoid.

Once per long rest, the crown may attempt to possess a willing or incapacitated humanoid within 5 ft of it. The target must succeed on a Wisdom or Charisma saving throw (DC 8 + proficiency + Charisma modifier), or the crown gains control of the target's body and loses control of its former body. For the duration of this effect, the target is unable to manipulate their body in any way, but maintains access to their senses. If the Right of Binding has not yet been completed, the target may repeat this save once per day. If the target succeeds on one of these repeat saving throws, they can remove the crown freely.
While the crown is possessing a body, it does not gain the skills or attributes of the body it possesses but does gain any movement speeds granted by the target's race.
While the crown is possessing a body, the crown and the body share the crown's hit point pool, and the joined entity has the resistances and vulnerability of the body it possesses.
If the crown's body dies, the crown lives on, but can no longer control that body and becomes detached from the body.
If the joined entity is knocked unconscious, the crown can be removed with a successful strength check (DC 10 + the number of days the crown has possessed the body, max DC 20) or by dealing 20 damage to the vines linking the crown to the body.

Sentry's Rest

The body sleeps. The crown does not.

When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn't render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.

Rite of Thorns

The crown tightens its grip on its target, locking it in a death hold. The only escape for the unfortunate subject... is death.

Once per day, the crown can attempt to cast the spell Rite of Thorns on a body it is currently possessing that is not currently affected by the Rite of Thorns.

Languages

You know Common and 1 additional language of your choice. However, you cannot speak.

Age

The bodies die. The crown lives on.

The crown can live forever, but the age of its bodies is finite, and depends on the lifespan of the creature being possessed.

Size

The crown itself is tiny, but the size of the joined entity is determined by the size class of the humanoid possessed.

Speed

The crown gains the speeds of any creatures it possesses. Without a creature, it is speed 0.

Florakinetics

The crown can produce flowers that it can magically manipulate and communicate through. As an action, the crown can attach a flower to a willing creature, causing it to take root in them. The crown can freely speak telepathically to creatures within 60 ft that it can see who have one of the crown's flowers rooted in them. In addition, as an action once per long rest, the crown can force a creature with a flower rooted in them to make a Wisdom or Intelligence saving throw or be incapacitated until the end of the crown's next turn.
