Homebrew Automaton Species Details
It is hard for one to accurately describe automaton as a disambiguation. The point of an automaton is that it could theoretically be anything, yet a few rules are always followed, else the people who classify races do not consider the being a robot. The rules are:
1. Automatons in many ways are an extension of their creator. Whether this is shown through the Automaton’s mannerisms, wishes, or purpose may vary.
2. An Automaton for the most part cannot understand an organic lifeform. It seems to find solace in either a more analytical (which typically shows itself as cynical) approach, or it simply decides not to think in favor of carrying on with its job. Besides, it doesn't seem like these organic lifeforms get themselves, anyways.
3. Automatons tend to excel at one thing and lack at everything else. Why give them skills their job does not require?
4. If an owner were to die, the Automaton will carry on as if nothing ever happened, unless directed otherwise.
5. Automatons, strong or weak, can be fragile and sensitive to harsh environments (that means no water).
Created by GrumboFunglus and soop.
HEAVILY based on WX-78 from the Don't Starve games and the Automaton race from the game Barony.
Automaton Traits
Strange and many times fragile, yet very proficient at a select few things.Boiler
Every automaton needs a source of fuel to continue to “live”. This fuel comes in the shape of any burnable item that fits inside the stomach hatch on the front of an automaton, where the boiler is located. Having to run off of heat means that and fire spells will double the speed of an automaton, as well as physical damage and fire based attacks.
Water spells/damage types will deal double the damage to an automaton and lower the fuel level by two pints every hit.
As most things do not burn forever, an automaton will need to consistently find ways to fuel itself.
AGE
An advanced automaton could theoretically live forever, given that it has a source of fuel and a creator or guardian to undergo the extremely difficult process of keeping it at prime condition.
For possible trouble this may cause, refer to rule no.4 relating to the existence of an automaton, and the paradox of Theseus' ship.
Size
Size should be chosen depending on the environment it was created in and the purpose it was created.
Speed
Refer to water vulnerability.
Language
By default, speaks the language assigned by the creator (usually the one the creator speaks), and may communicate with fellow automatons and computers of equal or lower stature to itself, unless a computer of higher stature wishes to speak with it.
Revival
Automatons will not enter the state of rolling to be revived upon death, but instead another player must take action to revive it. Another player must roll for intelligence to revive the automaton. Upon failing three times, the automaton dies. Rules for how many times an automaton can be revived will stay the same.
Ability Score Modifier
A player must choose to add 2 points to either intelligence or strength. The one not chosen must have 2 points subtracted.
Black And White
Only able to see in black and white.
Water Vulnerability
An automaton, unless for some ungodly reason ordered otherwise or forced, will never enter water. Entering water results in rolling at a disadvantage on all rolls, and after three turns, death. If a party member manages to revive the automaton, they will get three more turns to escape.
If revived after death by water, the boiler will require double the intake in order to increase fuel until the next time it naturally lowers.
Resistance
Automatons have a high heat tolerance, and their relative lack of emotion makes spells that play with emotions and desires ineffective. Resistant to environmental fire damage, and advantage to rolls against charming spells.
Fire damage spells only deal half the damage to an automaton that would otherwise be dealt to any other race.
