Homebrew Devil Species Details

Devils

Devils personify tyranny, with a totalitarian society dedicated to the domination of mortal life. The shadow of the Nine Hells of Baator extends far across the multiverse, and Asmodeus, the dark lord of Nessus, strives to subjugate the cosmos to satisfy his thirst for power. To do so, he must continually expand his infernal armies, sending his servants to the mortal realm to corrupt the souls from which new devils are spawned.

As a Devil, you were likely once a damned soul sent to the Hells, who strived to rise through the ranks of the Nine Hells. However, being a Devil doesn’t necessarily make you evil or aligned with other Devils. Perhaps a betrayal by a fellow Devil turned you sour to the ways of the Hells; you might’ve developed a soft spot for a mortal patron and betrayed your way of life to protect them; or maybe an ancestor of yours has beseeched your aid temporarily on the Material Plane. You choose whether to embrace or lament your relationship to the Hells.

Devil Traits

As a Devil, you have the following special traits.

Hellish Legacy

You are the recipient of powers from the Nine Hells which grant you supernatural abilities. Choose a legacy from the Hellish Legacies table. You gain the level 1 benefit of the chosen legacy.

When you reach character levels 3 and 5, you gain an additional benefit, as shown on the table.

Spines and Horns. You possess a sharp set of horns or spines on your body. When another creature hits you with a melee weapon attack, you can immediately use your Reaction to deal Piercing damage equal to your proficiency bonus to that creature.

Tail. You have a long thrashing tail. You can make an Unarmed Strike as a bonus action on your turn. If you do, it has a reach of 10 feet and deals 1d4 bludgeoning damage. You may not add your modifier to the damage it deals.

Languages

Your character knows at least three languages: Common plus two languages you roll or choose from the Standard Languages table. Knowledge of a language means your character can communicate in it, read it, and write it. Your class and other features might also give you languages.

The Standard Languages table lists languages that are widespread on D&D worlds. Every player character knows Common, which originated in the planar metropolis of Sigil, the hub of the multiverse. The other standard languages originated with the first members of the most prominent species in the worlds of D&D and have since spread widely.
