Homebrew Celestial Demon Species Details

  • Emotional Turmoil: Their mood swings can be violent and unpredictable, going from saintly compassion to ruthless aggression in the blink of an eye. These mood shifts are not just emotional but also physical, manifesting in pain or migraines as their bloodlines battle internally.
  • Identity Crisis: Celestial Demons often struggle with identity, questioning their purpose and worth. Are they agents of good? Harbingers of doom? Their inability to align with either good or evil leaves them feeling alienated from all.
  • Loneliness: Many Celestial Demons struggle with extreme isolation, even self-imposed, as they fear harming others or being hunted down. They may seek out dangerous adventures to fill the void in their hearts or test their strength against both celestial and fiendish foes.

Powers

Celestial Demons are among the most versatile beings when it comes to magic and innate abilities, drawing power from both divine and infernal sources. However, their powers can be unpredictable, tied to their emotions and internal state of balance.

  • Healing and Destruction:

    • Divine Magic: They can heal wounds, create protective barriers of light, or call upon divine judgment to smite their enemies.
    • Fiendish Magic: They wield destructive flames, summon infernal minions, and corrupt those who are vulnerable to dark forces.
    • Overload: Using too much of one type of magic (celestial or fiendish) can unbalance them, causing physical and mental pain or even temporary madness.
  • Aura of Dissonance: Celestial Demons emanate an unsettling presence, causing those around them to feel uneasy. This aura is a direct reflection of their inner conflict and can grow stronger or weaker depending on their emotional state. In combat, this aura can disrupt enemies’ focus, giving the Celestial Demon an advantage.

  • Emotion-Fueled Transformation: When a Celestial Demon experiences intense emotions (rage, love, despair), they may lose control of their form, temporarily gaining powerful traits of either their celestial or fiendish heritage. For example, a surge of anger could cause them to grow powerful horns, while a moment of serenity might give them glowing wings. These changes are temporary but make them more dangerous.

Societal Role and Isolation

  • Outcasts: Nearly all Celestial Demons are shunned by both Aasimar and Tiefling societies. Aasimars see them as tainted, unholy creatures, while Tieflings view them as traitors to their fiendish heritage. As a result, Celestial Demons are never accepted in any culture for long.
  • Nomads: Most Celestial Demons are wanderers, constantly on the move to avoid being hunted. They tend to live in the wilds, hidden from society, but a few brave souls attempt to infiltrate human cities by concealing their true nature.
  • Hunted: Angels, devils, and mortal hunters alike view them as aberrations that must be eradicated. Because of this, Celestial Demons live in constant fear of discovery. Their short lifespans are not due to natural causes but to being hunted and killed before reaching maturity.

Life Expectancy

Most Celestial Demons are lucky to survive past early childhood due to being hunted by both celestial and fiendish forces. The few who survive often do so by sheer willpower or the aid of those who seek to understand them rather than destroy them.

  • Short Lifespans: Even if not hunted, Celestial Demons rarely live long. Their internal conflict, combined with the stress of being constantly on the run, leads many to an early grave. No known Celestial Demon has lived past 50 years of age, though some legends speak of rare individuals who defy this fate.

Deities and Faith

Because of their conflicting nature, Celestial Demons are largely ignored by most gods, both good and evil.

  • Natural Deities: Deities of nature, neutrality, or chaos may take an interest in Celestial Demons, seeing them as beings that represent balance or the tension between opposing forces. Druids, in particular, may see them as part of the natural order—where chaos and harmony coexist.
  • Outcast Priests: Some Celestial Demons take up a path of faith to seek meaning, but they rarely serve traditional gods. Instead, they may serve forgotten or neutral deities, lost to history, or spirits of balance who accept them for what they are.

Cultural Influence and Myths

  • Figures of Legend: Few Celestial Demons have survived long enough to leave a mark on history, but those who do are often spoken of in fearful tones. Some are remembered as bringers of ruin—powerful warriors who could destroy entire battalions with their dual magic—while others are celebrated as saints, offering both destruction and salvation in equal measure.
  • Prophecy of the End Times: Some cultures believe that a Celestial Demon will one day tip the scales between good and evil, ushering in either an age of light or an age of darkness. These myths paint Celestial Demons as tragic figures, burdened with the weight of the world’s fate, though none yet have fulfilled such a destiny.

Celestial Demon Traits

Celestial Demons, therefore, exist as beings caught between worlds, walking the tightrope of destiny, feared for their potential to alter the balance between good and evil. Their story is one of constant survival, introspection, and the search for a place they can truly belong.

Emotion-Driven Transformation (Innate Ability)

  • Description: Their form shifts based on emotional intensity. During moments of extreme emotion (positive or negative), they can tap into their celestial or fiendish power, causing their physical traits to manifest and enhancing certain abilities.
  • Mechanics: As a bonus action, they can trigger a transformation that lasts for 1 minute, reflecting their emotional state:

Celestial Radiance

  • Description: Harnessing their Aasimar heritage, they can channel radiant energy to heal allies or blind enemies with divine light.
  • Mechanics: Once per long rest, they can emit a burst of radiant light that heals nearby allies for an amount of HP equal to their level or forces enemies to make a Constitution saving throw or be blinded for 1 minute. This ability can be used more effectively during moments of strong joy or love.

Infernal Wrath

Mechanics: Once per long rest, they can call upon their fiendish power to release a wave of hellfire, dealing fire damage in a 30-foot cone. Enemies must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d6 fire damage on a failed save or half on a successful one. This ability could recharge when they’re in a state of intense emotional stress or anger.

Aura of Conflict

Mechanics: As an action, they can activate an aura with a 10-foot radius that lasts for 1 minute. Enemies within the aura must make a Wisdom saving throw or suffer disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws for the duration. Allies within the aura have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed. The aura's effect is amplified during moments of strong emotion.

Divine Resilience

Description: Their celestial ancestry grants them resistance to certain types of damage and the ability to shrug off harmful effects.

Mechanics: They have resistance to radiant and necrotic damage at all times. In moments of extreme positive emotions, they gain immunity to being charmed or frightened for 1 minute.

Hellish Rebuke

Description: Their fiendish nature allows them to retaliate when struck, burning their attacker with infernal flames.

Mechanics: They can cast Hellish Rebuke as a reaction when hit by an attack. The spell deals 2d10 fire damage, scaling with level, and could be flavored with silver or violet fire to reflect their celestial influence.

Ethereal Wings

Description: During moments of heightened emotion, ethereal wings manifest, giving them temporary flight and enhancing their combat capabilities.

Mechanics: As a bonus action, they can summon celestial or fiendish wings, granting them a flying speed of 30 feet for 1 minute. If triggered during positive emotions, the wings are radiant and deal radiant damage to enemies they fly past. If triggered by negative emotions, the wings become shadowy or demonic, dealing necrotic damage to those nearby.

Balanced Soul

Description: Their hybrid nature allows them to resist certain harmful effects from both celestial and fiendish sources.

Mechanics: They have advantage on saving throws against spells and effects from celestials and fiends, reflecting their immunity to the direct influence of both sides.

Tainted Blessing

Description: Due to their conflicted nature, their healing abilities come with a price. Whenever they heal another, they risk taking on that person's suffering.

Mechanics: When they use a healing ability, they can choose to transfer any negative conditions (poisoned, frightened, paralyzed) from the target to themselves, reflecting their internal struggle. Meaning you have to take all of the negative conditions the chosen target has.

Fiendish Charm / Divine Grace

Description: They can subtly influence others, using their celestial or fiendish nature to manipulate or inspire.

Mechanics: They can cast Charm Person or Bless once per long rest, depending on whether they are more inclined to their fiendish or celestial side at that moment. This ability could become more potent when their emotions are heightened.

Judgment’s Edge

Description: They can channel their celestial and fiendish heritage into their weapons, allowing them to deliver judgment on their enemies.

Mechanics: Once per short rest, they can imbue their weapon with radiant or necrotic energy, adding 1d6 extra radiant damage (for positive emotions) or necrotic damage (for negative emotions) to their attacks for 1 minute.

Eclipsed Soul

Description: In moments of extreme emotional or physical duress, their celestial and fiendish bloodlines clash violently, allowing them to release their full power in a devastating burst of energy.

Mechanics: Once per long rest, when their HP drops below a certain threshold (e.g., 10% of their maximum HP), they can unleash a powerful wave of celestial and fiendish energy in a 30-foot radius. Enemies must make a Constitution saving throw or take 8d8 radiant or necrotic damage (depending on their emotional state). Allies within the radius are healed for 4d8. This ability can only be used when they are in a state of extreme emotion—either rage, despair, or euphoria.
