Homebrew Bat-Folk Species Details
Evolved in Isolation
Bat-Folk evolved in dark, secluded caves that are often connected to the Underdark. Due to the low visibility of their homes, Bat-Folk chose to hunt during the night rather than the day.
Seeing through sound
Rather than developing dark vision, Bat-Folk learned to echolocate to find what they were looking for. Because of this, their eyesight worsened, however they have yet to fully lose the ability to see entirely.
Distinguished through name
As a consequence of their low vision, Bat-Folk developed a special way to help differentiate between each other by adding a word before their last name. For instance, Vampire Bat-Folk would add Vam before their last name to indicate they are a specifically a Vampire Bat-Folk, or Fruit Bat-Folk would add Fur before their last name.
Quick and Cunning
Due to the hazardous conditions of the Underdark, Bat-Folk got especially good at avoiding predators. However, Even if a Bat-Folk were to be caught, they often use their wit's to escape, or charm to persuade their captor to let them go.
Terrible Swimmers
Due to the membrane that allows them to fly, Bat-Folk are notoriously terrible swimmers. In fact, one of the most common ways for Bat-Folk to perish is via drowning.
Wide Variations
Because Bat-Folk live all over the prime material plane, their appearance and diets vary wildly from colony to colony. Some Bat-Folk may be 2 feet tall with white fur, yellow skin, and a pointy pig nose. Others can be 6 feet tall with orangey-brown fur and large eyes. This also applies to their diets, some only eat fruit, some eat insects and small mammals, and some eat a mixture of both. One particular variety of Bat-Folk, the Vampire Bat-Folk, instead drink the blood of sleeping beasts and the occasional humanoid.
