Homebrew Cambion Species Details

Cambions are the offspring of mortals and fiends, typically succubi, incubi, or devils. These fiendish parents see their children either as tools for their schemes or burdens to be discarded, while mortal parents—if they survive the fiendish encounter—often view their Cambion offspring with a mixture of fear, guilt, and awe. Cambions typically bear visible signs of their infernal heritage: red or ash-gray skin, glowing eyes, horns, or small wings. However, these physical traits vary, with some Cambions appearing more mortal than others.

Regardless of their appearance, a Cambion always feels the pull of their fiendish bloodline. This manifests in dark impulses, a thirst for power, or an attraction to the chaotic and destructive forces of the universe. Despite these urges, many Cambions actively resist their fiendish heritage, seeking redemption or striving to carve their own destiny.

Outcasts by Nature

Cambions often live as outcasts, struggling to find acceptance in either the mortal world or among the fiends of the Lower Planes. Among mortals, they are feared and shunned, seen as reminders of dark powers best left undisturbed. Among fiends, Cambions are viewed as inferior due to their diluted blood. As a result, many Cambions grow up in isolation or adopt lives of wandering, searching for a place to belong.

Their status as outsiders gives Cambions a unique perspective on the world. They are often pragmatic and self-reliant, used to surviving by their wits, charm, or raw power. Cambions may gravitate toward roles where their fiendish heritage offers an advantage—mercenaries, warlocks, or spies—or they may seek to distance themselves from their origins by taking up holy callings or heroic quests.

The Struggle of Souls

A Cambion’s life is marked by the inner struggle between their fiendish nature and their mortal soul. This conflict is often represented in their desires: while their fiendish side urges them toward chaos, destruction, and power, their mortal side yearns for connection, purpose, and meaning. How a Cambion resolves this inner battle depends on their experiences and choices.

Some Cambions embrace their fiendish nature, reveling in their ability to wield infernal powers and cause fear. These Cambions may become leaders of demonic cults, warlocks in service to fiendish patrons, or ruthless conquerors. Others reject their fiendish heritage, seeking redemption or a place among the forces of good. These Cambions may take on quests to prove their worth, fight against the fiends of their bloodline, or work as defenders of the innocent, forever struggling to control their darker impulses.

Fiendish Abilities

Cambions possess inherent magical abilities passed down from their fiendish parent. Their command over fire, darkness, and deception makes them dangerous foes, and their natural charisma can be used to manipulate those around them. One of their most feared abilities is their capacity to take the form of a slain enemy, a reflection of their ever-shifting nature and the duality of their existence.

Cambion Names

Cambions typically adopt names from their mortal heritage or create new ones that reflect their fiendish nature. Some may take titles or nicknames that emphasize their power, such as "Flameborn," "Hellscorn," or "Darkblood."

Cambion Traits

"Born of infernal blood and mortal flesh, Cambions inherit a blend of fiendish power and human resilience. Their dark heritage grants them resistance to fire, the ability to conjure minor infernal magic, and unnerving charm. Yet, their most feared trait is the ability to take the form of a slain foe, reflecting their shifting nature and connection to the dark forces of the Lower Planes."
