Homebrew Demonic Heritage, Tabaxi Species Details

Originally created by the Cat Lord - a divine being of the Upper Planes - to blend the qualities of humanoids and cats, the tabaxi were intended to be graceful and inquisitive hunters. However, some tabaxi were cursed at birth to exhibit a nature more fiendish in origin.

The demonic heritage tabaxi exhibit both feline and fiendish qualities. Their bodies are covered in sleek fur with feline features like ears, muzzles, and tails. Yet their appearances are marred by demonic aspects - glowing eyes and black or darkened sclera, small horns, sharpened fangs and claws. They move with an unsettling blend of feline grace and demonic ferocity.

Some demonic tabaxi revel in their fiendish natures, behaving as vicious predators that stalk and torment their prey. Others struggle to retain some semblance of normalcy, using their enhanced senses and abilities for more noble purposes. All bear the curse of their tainted bloodline.

Cursed Bloodline

As you are of demonic lineage, your soul is irreversibly stained. As such, those of divine lineage show a natural disdain towards you, and you can never become a Cleric or a Paladin, and gods will never answer your prayers, almost as if you were invisible to them. In addition, tabaxi cursed with a demonic bloodline are typically colourblind. Bear in mind, this rule is not concrete, and can be ignored if your DM allows it.

Demonic Heritage, Tabaxi Traits

As a Demonic Heritage Tabaxi, you have the following racial traits.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid.

Size - Medium

You are Medium.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 ft, you also gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. If you are small, your walking speed is reduced to 25 ft.

Fiendish Hide

Your talon-like claws are natural weapons that deal 1d6 + your Strength modifier piercing damage on a hit, as they are built for stabbing rather than slicing. You also have resistance to fire damage, but vulnerability to spells that have effects like the Banishment spell, meaning you must roll twice to resist that spell and spells like it, and take the lower roll of the two.

Demonic Senses

You can see in dim light within 60 ft. of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light, only discerning colors in that darkness as shades of gray, and your sense of smell is also stronger than that of other tabaxi, equivalent to that of a Hell Hound, granting advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Detect Soul

You can use an action a number of times equal to 1 + your Proficiency Score (minimum of 1) per short rest to attempt to divine the alignment of ones soul, be it good, evil, or something in between. When you use this action to target a creature, you must make a Wisdom (Perception) check relating to smell against a DC of the DM's choice. The difficulty of the required check may vary, a standard peasant being easier to detect than a powerful sorcerer or king.

At 5th level, you can use an action equal to 1 + your Proficiency Score (minimum of 1) per short rest to try and detect the scent of undead within 60 feet, as well as their strength (based on how pungent the smell is) and approximate location, but not their exact numbers with a Wisdom (Perception) check relating to smell. The difficulty of the required check may vary, a hoard of newly raised zombies being easier to detect than, say, a disguised vampire.

Fiendish Transformation

At level 9, your creature type changes to Fiend and you gain a Flying Speed of 60 ft. Large bat-like wings emerge from your back in an excruciating process that lasts 10 minutes. Afterwards, your appearance becomes more fiendish. The wings are treated as a permanent extension of your body, unless removed by force (e.g. being cut off).

If your wings are removed, they can be reattached if you position them back to their original spots for 1d4 hours. During this time, the wings reattach themselves by reattaching the sinew and tendons that were severed.

When removed, the wings serve as a powerful alchemical ingredient, serving as a replacement for any potion or spell that requires demonic essence. If destroyed, the destruction is permanent unless you are the target of a spell similar to Regenerate, in which case they will slowly grow back over the course of one week.
