Homebrew Devouji Species Details

“But you do see the way people look at you, devil’s child.”

Those black eyes, cold as a winter storm, were staring right into her heart and the sudden seriousness in his voice jolted her.

“What is it they say?” he asked. “One’s a curiosity, two’s a conspiracy—”

“Three’s a curse,” she finished. “You think I haven’t heard that rubbish before?”

“I know you have.” When she glared at him, he added, “It’s not as if I’m plumbing the depths of your mind, dear girl. That is the burden of every tiefling. Some break under it, some make it the millstone around their neck, some revel in it.” He tilted his head again, scrutinizing her, with that wicked glint in his eyes. “You fight it, don’t you? Like a little wildcat, I wager. Every little jab and comment just sharpens your claws.”

— Erin M. Evans, Brimstone Angels

With hate in their eyes, they glare and mock us. With all they have, they throw rocks and kick us out of cities, and with all they have they try to kill us. None truly understand us and what we have gone through. One may call us evil or the children of evil embodied. Some would rather kill us than hear us out, but that is the cost when you have the blood of a Devouji Devil. Who would dare to listen to us when we speak? They dare laugh at us and drag us down. When they pierce our skin they would rather drag our corpses down the streets to glorify their evil deeds and yet call us evil. Though we may be born evil, doesn't mean we must stay evil.

Dark Bloodline

Devouji is in the form of human bodies with the appearance of demon properties. Their bloodlines, though cursed to be judged and mistreated in the world they are born, have been gifted in many ways beyond what mortals can perceive. However, their infernal heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Devouji have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelope’s horns. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes glow brightly in certain colors depending on which bloodline they fall under. Their eyes can glow red, white, silver, blue, purple, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil. Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration but also include various shades of other strange colors. Their hair, cascading down from behind their horns, is usually dark, from black or brown to dark red, blue, or purple.

Cautious Lone-Wolf

Devouji consists of a large population with many in different tribes. Most are found in medium-sized cities, towns, or villages. Devouji are found mostly in the Under Void cities or towns, often in the roughest quarters of those places, where they grow up to be swindlers, thieves, or crime lords. Sometimes they live among other minority populations in enclaves where they are treated with more respect.

Being far from their homeland, Devouji know that they have to make their own way in the world and that they have to be strong to survive. They are not quick to trust anyone who claims to be a friend, but when a Devouji’s companions demonstrate that they trust him or her, the Devouji learns to extend the same trust to them. And once a Devouji gives someone loyalty, the Devouji is a firm friend or ally for life.

MET WITH MISTRUST

Ignorant people tend to be suspicious of Devouji's, assuming that their infernal heritage has left its mark on their personality and morality, not just their appearance. The reality is that a Devouji’s bloodline doesn’t affect their personality. They are gifted with magic from the infernal realms but chart their own course in life.
