Homebrew Bound Elemental (Fire) Species Details
Elemental Origin
Born into one of the four chaotic elemental planes, your natural form is entirely composed of your inherit element. As a fire elemental, you are passionate, vibrant, and destructive by nature. Your endless ages in the Elemental Plane of Fire has rendered you a force of nature, driven by instinct and elemental fire. For one reason or another, whether through a rift in reality or an extant portal, you have found your way into the material plane. There is very little civilization or culture in the elemental planes, so all of your experiences on the material plane are novel and unique to you. However, the lack of primordial heat in the material plane is a danger to you. If you spend too long away from flame, your fire begins to wane.
Bound to Machinery
Perhaps through the trickery of a wizard, the ingenuity of an artificer, or your own desire to protect your elemental form, you have found yourself inexorably bound to a construct of metal and magic. Your construct form appears as a streaming suit of armor, glowing with your elemental power. As part of binding your power to this construct, you can safely walk the material plane without fear of water or cold, but you are tethered to the physical object of the armor. You can spend an action to leave the armor and assume your true elemental form, but you must eventually return, lest your flame go out.
You may be seeking a way to return to your home plane, a means of shedding the armor if it was forced upon you, or perhaps just looking to take the opportunity the armor gives you to live an adventurous life. The choice is yours!
Bound Elemental (Fire) Traits
Your Bound Elemental shares features with both Warforged and a true Fire Elemental.Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Primordial. Primordial is a guttural language, filled with harsh syllables and hard consonants.
Ability Score Increase
Your Intelligence score increases by 1 and your Constitution score increases by 2 while in your armor. When out of your armor, your Constitution decreases by 2 and your Dexterity increases by 2.
Age
A Bound Elemental is timeless and ageless in it's natural form. However, the armor sustaining it is susceptible to the wear and tear of time.
Size
The armor you are bound to can be as large as a furnace or compact as a toaster. Your elemental form is amorphous, but you are still considered a medium sized creature in both forms.
Your size is Medium. To set the height and weight of your armor randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:
Size modifier = 2d6
Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches
Weight in pounds = 270 + (4 × your size modifier)
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet in armor. Outside your armor your base walking speed is 40 feet.
Elementally Constructed Resilience
Your construct form has remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You are resistant to fire damage.
In your elemental form you are immune to fire damage.
Firewatcher's Rest
Piloting your armor takes constant focus and effort. When you take a long rest, you must leave your armor to achieve the benefits of a long rest. However, you can rest safely inside an existing flame, such as a campfire, torch, or brazier.
Integrated Defense
Your construct body has built-in defensive layers, which can be enhanced with armor:
- You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
- You can don only armor with which you have proficiency. To don armor other than a shield, you must incorporate it into your body over the course of 1 hour, during which you remain in contact with the armor. To doff armor, you must spend 1 hour removing it. You can rest while donning or doffing armor in this way.
- While you live, the armor incorporated into your body can’t be removed against your will.
You lose all these benefits when outside your armor.
Unbound Element
When you leave your bound armor, you gain several benefits, but also are susceptible to new dangers.
As mentioned in previous features, outside your armor you gain the following benefits:
- Your Constitution score increase of 2 is changed to an increase of 2 in Dexterity.
- Your base walking speed increases to 40 feet.
- You gain immunity to fire damage.
- You lose the Armor Class bonus to your construct armor.
In addition to the changes you also gain the following features:
- Fire Form. Your elemental form can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
- Illumination. You shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light in an additional 30 feet.
- Water Susceptibility. For every 5 feet you move in water, or for every gallon of water splashed on you, you take 1 cold damage.
- Limited Fuel. If you leave your armor for more than 1 minute, your elemental power begins to fade rapidly. For each turn you spend outside your armor past the 1 minute limit, you take 5 cold damage. This effect can be avoided by consuming flammable material such as wood, coal, or paper. You may also use an existing flame to sustain yourself in the same way that you must take a long rest.
