Homebrew Aquaspora Species Details
Physical Description
Each spore is no bigger than a grain of rice, but millions of them group together to form a shape that resembles a human figure. Their sizes and thicknesses vary, though they are often found in a human-like shape when outside of water. These creatures can appear in any shade of blue, allowing them to blend seamlessly into their surroundings. When threatened, they glow, luring predators into a hypnotic trance. Outside of water, they produce a jelly-like substance that surrounds them and lasts for up to 24 hours. In water, they glide effortlessly, but on land, they move by mimicking the walking patterns of other creatures, though they are slow. In water, they are fast and agile.
Habitat
These beings reside in deep-water caves, often in ancient ruins on the ocean floor. Capable of withstanding immense pressure, they are found in all oceans, from tropical waters to freezing depths. Due to their elusive nature, they are hard to find, and their numbers are dwindling. They have been known to form rare symbiotic bonds with the Glowing Tide cult, granting certain cult members the ability to see and breathe underwater, glow, and regenerate limbs.
Culture & Society
Clusters live in groups, known as a "Cluster," with a hivemind mentality. They are deeply protective of their species and will do anything to preserve the Cluster. Once a year, they rise to the ocean surface, glowing so brightly that the moon appears to turn blue. If they fail to glow, they turn red and are banished from the hivemind. A red Cluster produces an odd aroma that attracts predators. Older Clusters can communicate using flashing patterns and may even gain the ability to speak. Each Cluster is led by a matriarch, to whom all information from the Cluster is sent.
Abilities & Traits
Sea Mushrooms do not require sleep or air and are immune to poison, pressure, and most physical attacks. They are resistant to fire but vulnerable to cold and lightning. They regenerate from most injuries and can manipulate small amounts of water. Their bioluminescence is not only for communication but can also heal others using their spores. The spores also possess healing properties, allowing the Cluster to mend wounds quickly. The creatures can alter their shape with ease, making them elusive and adaptable to different environments.
Personality & Behavior
Most Sea Mushrooms are singularly focused on the preservation of their Cluster and have little individual personality. They are naturally solitary, and their rare sightings are often attributed to the destruction of their species by mermaids, who hunt them for war paint and food. Their hatred for mermaids is legendary, as mermaids are responsible for much of their decline. The matriarch controls the Cluster's actions, and all sensory input is sent directly to her.
History & Lore
Ancient and shrouded in mystery, the origin of the Sea Mushroom race is believed to be a curse placed upon the lost city of Atlantis. According to legend, a golden Cluster once led their people in a century-long war against mermaids. Despite the passage of time, stories persist of different-colored Clusters carrying out mysterious tasks, often marked by their rare abilities and strange customs.
Aquaspora Traits
Bioluminescent Aura, Jelly Coat, Regenerative Spores, Sporespawn Communication (Hivemind), Mutable Form, Environmental Immunities and Resistances, Water ManipulationBioluminescent Aura
Distracting Glow (Reaction): When threatened, the Aquaspora can emit a 10-foot radius of light, forcing hostile creatures within range to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 13). On a failed save, these creatures have a disadvantage on their first attack against the Aquaspora until the start of its next turn.
Hypnotic Charm (Action): Once per long rest, the Aquaspora can intensify this glow to charm creatures within 10 feet for 1 minute. Affected creatures must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 13) or become charmed by the Aquaspora. The charm effect ends early if the Aquaspora takes damage.
Water Manipulation
Aquaspora possesses a natural affinity for controlling water, a skill that begins with minor adjustments but can expand as they mature. At early levels, they can create subtle currents, redirect small flows, or slightly alter water pressure around them. With practice, this control develops, allowing them to create temporary currents for faster movement, form weak barriers of water to deflect small objects, or gently manipulate aquatic flora. At higher levels, an Aquaspora can extend its reach further, potentially influencing water over larger areas or creating protective water shields in combat. This ability is especially effective in aquatic environments, where they can use it to navigate complex terrains and enhance their defense.
Tidal Insight
Through their bond with the ocean depths and the Aquaspora Cluster, the Aquaspora gains an enhanced awareness and physical resilience. This connection grants them a +1 to both Wisdom and Constitution scores, reflecting their heightened perceptiveness and durability. They also gain proficiency in two skills of their choice from Perception, Stealth, Survival, or Nature, each aligning with their instinctual understanding of underwater environments and survival. Tidal Insight embodies the Aquaspora's deeply attuned senses and steadfast resilience in the face of the ocean’s mysteries and challenges.
Jelly Coat
When an Aquaspora leaves the water, their body excretes a jelly-like substance that coats their form, offering a temporary protective layer. This jelly coat lasts for up to 24 hours, providing resistance to all physical damage. While on land, it helps cushion the Aquaspora’s form, allowing them to survive without water. However, the jelly coat makes them extremely weak to cold, increasing their vulnerability to freezing temperatures, and they become more susceptible to electrical attacks. Despite this, the Jelly Coat allows the Aquaspora to adapt to terrestrial conditions for limited periods.
Regenerative Spores
Regenerative Spores allow the Aquaspora to slowly heal itself over time. When injured, the Aquaspora can release spores that mend its wounds. This regeneration does not require rest but is slower than typical healing methods
Sporespawn Communication
Aquaspora possess a unique form of communication that relies on their spores. By releasing patterns of bioluminescent flashes or chemical signals, they can convey simple messages, warnings, or commands to other members of their Cluster. This communication is silent, fast, and instinctual, allowing Aquaspora to coordinate movements and share important information without the need for spoken words. While younger Clusters may only communicate basic ideas or emotions, older Clusters can convey more complex messages and strategies. The range of this communication depends on the maturity of the Cluster, but it is typically effective within a few hundred feet. In moments of extreme distress, Aquaspora may send out rapid, intense signals to warn the Cluster of immediate danger.
Mutable Form
The Aquaspora possess the ability to change their physical appearance, allowing them to reshape their bodies at will. They can mimic humanoid features or adapt to various natural forms, such as blending into their surroundings or assuming the shape of different aquatic creatures. This transformation is not instantaneous but can be done quickly, taking only a short time to alter limbs, facial features, or other body characteristics. While they can change the look and texture of their bodies, their overall size and mass remain the same. This ability allows them to be highly adaptable in their environment, using their mutable form to blend in or respond to threats

Sacrifice Options
Each participant may choose one sacrifice, gaining unique abilities based on their offering.
- Echo of the Tide
Sacrifice: The participant sacrifices their voice, giving up the ability to speak, as well as a cherished memory or deeply held belief, in exchange for the Aquaspora’s gift.
Physical Change: Their veins pulse with soft bioluminescent light, visible just beneath their skin, a constant reminder of their bond with the Aquaspora.
Effect:
- Symbiotic Glow: The participant’s veins glow with bioluminescent light, granting the ability to communicate silently with other creatures affected by the ritual over short distances (up to 60 feet).
- Silent Communication: The participant gains the ability to send simple thoughts, emotions, and ideas to others within range without speaking, allowing for a deeper connection and understanding with fellow participants.
- Tide's Influence: Once per long rest, the participant can channel the Aquaspora’s hypnotic glow to influence a creature they can see within 30 feet. The creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + Charisma modifier + proficiency bonus) or become charmed for 1 minute. While charmed in this way, the creature is under the participant’s control, though they cannot force it to take suicidal actions or acts directly harmful to itself. The participant can issue simple commands, such as “approach me” or “stay in place,” and the creature will follow them to the best of its ability.
- Heart of Resilience
Sacrifice: The participant sacrifices their heart during the ritual.
Physical Change: A faint, shimmering pulse can be seen in the participant’s chest, where their heart once was, symbolizing their deep connection to the Aquaspora’s resilience.
Effect:
- Enduring Vitality: The participant gains a permanent increase to their maximum HP by +10 and regains 1d6 HP at the end of each of their turns.
- Lifeblood of the Deep: While submerged in water, the participant gains a lifesteal effect. Whenever they deal damage to a creature, they regain hit points equal to half the damage dealt (rounded down). This effect lasts for one minute and can be used once per long rest.
- Fortitude of the Deep: Once per long rest, the participant can call upon the Aquaspora’s strength, granting themselves temporary hit points equal to their maximum HP for one minute. These temporary hit points are not lost by damage, but if they are reduced to 0, the effect ends early.
-
Shard of the Tide
Sacrifice: The participant sacrifices one of their limbs (a hand, arm, or leg) during the ritual. The loss of this limb represents a true bond with the Aquaspora, and they give up a part of themselves to preserve the cluster.
Physical Change: The lost limb is replaced by a translucent, bioluminescent prosthetic made of a jelly-like substance. The arm or leg pulses with a soft, glowing light, acting as an extension of the Aquaspora’s influence. It’s functional but has an eerie, fluid-like quality.
Effect:- Aquatic Limb: The prosthetic limb enhances the participant’s combat prowess, allowing them to wield it as a unique weapon. The limb functions as a weapon that deals 1d6 force damage on a hit. The limb can be used in place of a normal weapon attack but has the added benefit of being more flexible and malleable.
- Extended Reach: The participant can use the prosthetic limb to stretch and extend its reach by up to 15 feet. This allows them to make melee attacks at a range or grab items, manipulate objects, or perform grapples from afar. The limb is strong enough to hold onto objects or enemies, allowing the participant to use it in creative ways during combat.
- Dual-Form Utility: The limb can also morph into two versatile forms: Shield Form and Tool Form, which can be switched with a bonus action.
- Shield Form:
- The limb hardens and expands, forming a protective barrier.
- Grants a +2 bonus to AC.
- Can absorb up to 5 damage (once per short rest), providing temporary protection against sudden hits
- The limb becomes a versatile extension for tasks requiring reach, grip, or finesse.
- Allows the participant to use it as a grappling hook, climbing aid, or tool for underwater foraging and salvaging.
- Grants advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks made to climb or pull objects.
Tool Form:
1. The limb becomes a versatile extension for tasks requiring reach, grip, or finesse.
2. Allows the participant to use it as a grappling hook, climbing aid, or tool for underwater foraging and salvaging.
3. Grants advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks made to climb or pull objects.
- The Eyes of the Tide
Sacrifice: The participant sacrifices their eyes, losing their ability to see normally.
Physical Change: Their eyes change to a deep, shimmering silver or blue, symbolizing the deep connection with the Aquaspora's cluster.
Effect:
- Psychic Resilience: The participant gains advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
- Memory of the Tide: The participant gains a unique ability to recall specific details of past events or combat situations. This manifests as an innate sense of danger, granting them a +2 bonus to initiative rolls.
- Aquatic Foresight: Once per long rest, the participant can choose to gain a vision of the future, allowing them to reroll a failed attack roll, saving throw, or ability check.
- Shifting Tide
Sacrifice: The participant sacrifices pieces of their flesh, cutting away portions of skin, muscle, or tissue to offer to the Aquaspora.
Physical Change: In return, a thin, translucent, jelly-like layer forms over their skin, pulsing softly with bioluminescent light. This substance acts as a protective barrier, covering their body.
Effect:
- Resilient Skin: The jelly-like substance grants the participant resistance to force damage.
- Silent Movement: The jelly-like skin enhances their stealth capabilities, granting advantage on Stealth checks as their movement becomes quieter and more fluid.
- Fluid Form: Once per long rest, the participant can use a reaction to reduce any bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage they take by half as the jelly-like substance absorbs the impact, creating a momentary fluid barrier.
