Homebrew Aesir Species Details
At the highest of Ygdrassil, far above the sky and clouds where the world looks smaller, the air is thin and the frigid winds howl, dwell the mighty Aesir. Few folk can claim to have seen an Aesir, and fewer still can claim friendship with them. The Aesir wander a rich realm of grasslands, light, and cold. Their bodies look as the human body but they have great physical power. Their spirits take after the nine realm, making them nomads who wander from plane to plane. Their hearts are infused with the cold regard of war, leaving each Aesir with the responsibility to earn his or her own place in the world or die trying.
World Explorers
Being an advanced civilization, the Aesir interacted with various other races and cultures. Among those known included the Centaurs, the Dragons, the Giants, the Goliaths, and the ancient human empires. Their encounters with other groups helped the Aesir build a higher reputation for themselves, earning respect from the other races, while also making them enemies of some. As children, The Aesir are taught about the many races, including even learning their languages.
Ale, Fights and Knowledge
For Aesir, competition exists only when it is supported by a level playing field. Competition measures talent, dedication, and effort. Those factors determine survival ability across all the realms, not reliance on magic items, money, or other elements that can tip the balance one way or the other. The Aesir happily rely on such benefits, but they are careful to remember that such an advantage can always be lost. Also most competitions between the Aesir becomes drinking contests.
This trait manifests most strongly when the Aesir interact with other folk. The relationship between peasants and nobles puzzles Aesir. If a king lacks the intelligence or leadership to lead, then clearly the most talented person in the kingdom should take his place. Aesir rarely keep such opinions to themselves, and mock folk who rely on society’s structures or rules to maintain power.
Older and Wiser
The Aesir can live to be more than 5,000 years old, so the oldest living Aesir often remember a very different world. For example, some of the oldest Aesir may recall when Asgard was built through war instead of peace. Or how an ally for centuries was once a most hated enemy. This can lead to bias and grudges that outlive some civilizations. And leads some Asgardians to wait decades before going to the ashes of fallen civilizations remembering where their valued treasured were once stores.
The Aesir are solid and enduring like the nine realms they love, weathering the passage of centuries with stoic endurance and little change. They respect the traditions of other races while mostly preferring their own battle and festival based culture. Many Aesir are stubborn and despite asking for help. Believing that true strength is shown and earned by encouraging the force of will. This is very different from a rousing party that may be just as likely to feast and drink ale for weeks at a time as travel to an unknown world and do battle side by side. Comradery is very important to the otherwise anti-social Aesir. It is better to fall side by side with a friend than to live long alone.
