Homebrew Dhampir Species Details
Poised between the realms of the living and the dead, dhampirs exist as a unique blend of life and undeath. Born from the touch of vampires or through mysterious, supernatural circumstances, dhampirs retain their grip on life, yet they are marked by their undead lineage. These enigmatic beings are often cursed with a powerful thirst for life’s essence, which manifests in various forms, whether it be blood, flesh, psychic energy, or even dreams. This insatiable hunger grants them heightened abilities, but it also sets them apart from other mortals, making them outcasts or feared hunters in the shadows.
A Life of Eternal Hunger
Dhampirs walk a fine line between the worlds of the living and the undead, constantly battling their inner cravings. Some dhampirs view their monstrous nature as a curse, striving to overcome their urges through sheer willpower or by pursuing noble causes. Others embrace their darker side, using their vampiric powers to become formidable adventurers, monster slayers, or even predators themselves. This constant inner conflict can either drive them to heroic deeds or push them toward a life of villainy.
Their undying hunger is as varied as the dhampirs themselves. While many are drawn to the taste of blood like their vampiric progenitors, others crave more esoteric forms of sustenance, such as raw flesh, psychic energy, or the dreams of the living. The hunger is ever-present, a reminder of their cursed existence, and indulging in it can bring both power and peril.
A Legacy of Shadows
The origins of a dhampir are as varied and mysterious as their powers. Some are born from unions between vampires and mortals, inheriting a fraction of their vampiric parent’s strength. Others are the result of dark pacts, necromantic rituals, or experimental transformations that left them forever altered. A dhampir might have been a victim of a vampire’s attack, only to rise again with a blend of their former life and the curse of undeath. Regardless of their origin, every dhampir carries the weight of their lineage, often wandering in search of purpose or a way to master their inner darkness.
Dhampirs and Society
Dhampirs are often solitary figures, shunned by both the living and the undead. Mortals may fear them for their vampiric traits, while true vampires might view them as lesser beings or failed transformations. Because of this, many dhampirs find it difficult to fit in with society, preferring to live on the fringes as hunters, scholars of the occult, or wanderers. Despite this, dhampirs can be fiercely loyal to those who earn their trust, making them valuable allies in any adventuring party.
Unnatural Abilities
The supernatural nature of dhampirs grants them several powers that set them apart from ordinary mortals. Their vampiric heritage provides them with increased speed, the ability to see in the dark, and a life-draining bite that can empower them in combat. Many dhampirs are adept at scaling walls and ceilings like spiders, a trait that adds to their eerie, supernatural presence. Yet, their most defining trait is their ability to stave off death itself, as they do not require air to breathe and possess an unnatural resilience to certain mortal limitations.
Becoming a Dhampir
For some, the transformation into a dhampir is a curse laid upon them against their will, while for others, it is a fate they willingly accept in pursuit of power or revenge. Regardless of the path, becoming a dhampir is a life-altering event that forever changes how they interact with the world around them. Many dhampirs become adventurers, driven by the desire to uncover the secrets of their own existence or to use their cursed powers for a higher purpose. Others embrace a darker path, becoming hunters of the living in pursuit of their endless hunger.
Appearance
Dhampirs resemble their mortal ancestry, but with a touch of the unnatural. Their skin may be pale or carry a slight deathly hue, their eyes gleaming with an otherworldly light. Fanged teeth and sharpened senses are common among dhampirs, giving them a predatory look that can be unnerving to those who encounter them. Despite their undead nature, dhampirs are often eerily beautiful, with a charm that can draw others in, even as it hints at the danger they represent.
Roleplaying a Dhampir
When playing a dhampir, consider the nature of your character’s hunger and how it influences their actions. Are they a reluctant hero battling their monstrous nature, or a predator embracing their dark gifts? Perhaps your dhampir struggles to resist the lure of their hunger, seeking solace in a life of adventuring to distract themselves from their urges. Or maybe they see themselves as a weapon against the undead, using their vampiric powers to hunt down the creatures of the night.
Dhampirs are often haunted by their past, whether it’s a tragic love story, a failed experiment, or a mysterious curse. Embrace the duality of your character as both hunter and hunted, and explore the moral complexities of living between two worlds.
Dhampir Traits
Dhampirs possess a blend of supernatural and mortal characteristics, granting them enhanced agility, resilience, and an array of vampiric abilities. Their unique traits stem from their undead lineage, allowing them to navigate both the realms of the living and the shadows of the undead.Ability Score Increase
Description:
Increase one ability score by 2, and increase a different one by 1, or increase three different ability scores by 1.
Notes:
This gives flexibility for different character builds, allowing players to adjust their Dhampir's stats to fit their preferred playstyle.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Deathless Nature
Description:
You don’t need to breathe.
Notes:
This trait is particularly useful for exploring underwater or in environments where air is limited, and it also makes you immune to effects like suffocation and certain poisons
Spider Climb
Description:
You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. Starting at 3rd level, you can move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, while leaving your hands free.
Notes:
This reflects your supernatural ability to cling to walls and ceilings, similar to a vampire’s ability to defy gravity.
Vampiric Bite
Description:
Your fanged bite is a natural weapon, which counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. You add your Constitution modifier, instead of your Strength modifier, to the attack and damage rolls when you attack with this bite. It deals 1d4 piercing damage on a hit.
- While you are missing half or more of your hit points, you have advantage on attack rolls you make with this bite.
- When you hit a creature with it that isn’t a Construct or an Undead, you can empower yourself in one of the following ways of your choice:
- Regain hit points equal to the piercing damage dealt by the bite.
- Gain a bonus to the next ability check or attack roll you make; the bonus equals the piercing damage dealt by the bite.
- You can empower yourself with this bite a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Notes:
This trait is central to the Dhampir's vampiric nature, allowing you to both heal yourself and boost your abilities through your bite. It's particularly useful when you’re low on health, thanks to the advantage on attack rolls.
