Homebrew axalan Species Details

The Axalani are an amphibious race of humanoids with strong ties to water and its mysteries. They are easily recognized by their smooth, vibrant skin that glows faintly in shades of pink, blue, or purple, reminiscent of bioluminescence found in deep aquatic ecosystems. Their delicate, frond-like external gills, which frame their heads like crowns, give them an otherworldly elegance. Often described as serene and wise, the Axalani are deeply in tune with the rhythms of nature, especially the water that sustains their lives.

Axalani possess extraordinary regenerative abilities, capable of healing wounds rapidly and even regrowing lost body parts under the right conditions. This unique trait has earned them reverence and fear from other races, who often view them as blessed or cursed by the gods. These regenerative powers, combined with their natural affinity for magic, particularly water-based spells, make them formidable allies or adversaries.

Axalani communities, called Axalans, are marvels of natural beauty and ingenuity. Whether built in serene underwater grottos, amid lush mangrove swamps, or on the shores of sparkling lakes, their settlements blend seamlessly with the environment. Axalans often incorporate flowing water into their architecture, using natural currents to shape homes and public spaces. Their culture values harmony, both within their communities and with the world around them. They are skilled in crafting from organic materials like coral, shell, and driftwood, creating tools, art, and weapons that reflect their aquatic heritage.

Culturally, the Axalani are drawn to the ebb and flow of life. They view time as a series of cycles, much like the tides, and believe in balancing life's challenges with its blessings. Though they are generally peaceful, they can be fierce protectors of their homes and kin. Many Axalani are storytellers and songkeepers, passing down legends through fluid, melodic oral traditions.

While they thrive in aquatic environments, Axalani are not bound to water and can venture onto land with ease. However, they prefer to remain near water sources, as prolonged dryness can weaken their vitality. Their innate magic, which manifests as control over water and mist, serves them both in survival and in battle, allowing them to shift the battlefield to their advantage.

To outsiders, the Axalani can seem enigmatic and aloof, but those who earn their trust find them loyal and empathetic friends. Despite their mysterious demeanor, they are often willing to share their knowledge of the natural world and the secrets of the water. For the Axalani, life is a constant flow, and they strive to move with it, adapting, growing, and thriving wherever the currents may take them.

axalan Traits

Regeneration Axolotls have an extraordinary ability to regenerate lost body parts. When you take damage, you can heal a number of hit points equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1) at the start of your turn. This regeneration can be used once per short or long rest. However, this regeneration does not work on limbs or organs that are completely severed or destroyed in a magical or unnatural way.
