Homebrew Aguaria Species Details
Have you ever looked deep into a body of water and had that dark feeling it is staring back at you, then you may very well have encountered an Aguaria. These peoples inhabit the waters of which they are born, some are known to leave their land in search of adventure. On land, you may mistaken one for a walking body of water, and you wouldn’t be wrong, as the Aguaria are said to have be made by the hands of ancient water elementals, and their body’s flow with water.
Aguaria tend to be benevolent beings with kind heart and gentle souls, but you wouldn’t want to boil one’s temper. Depending on the liquid they were created in (fresh water, salt water, saline etc), once fully submerged within it, they can travel at rapid speeds through the body of water, having no trouble with aquatic terrain. Often times, they can be kleptomaniacs, trying to carry with them every piece of humanoid culture they can find.
Connection to the water
With a distinct ancestry to the water elementals and the tides of the seas across the lands, it’s no surprise that the Aguaria are naturally gifted with spells revolving around the manipulation of, control of and use of water. These spells are a strong power in their arsenal.
Wild and Adventurous
Aguaria, in their kindness are are no stranger to risk due to their naivety, which may appear as stupidity in one but ignorance in another. Though rest assured, they are not dumb people, many research for many years before coming to land, before continuing their pursuit of knowledge; as such, an aquaria is known to be proficient in many areas of magic, fighting, arts and dabbling in all kinds of skills.
Despite their naivety in the face of danger, an Aguaria rarely changes its moral perceptions of all species, through no lack of trying. But through proper research they may come to a rounded conclusion that some things are just down right mean, and tend to stay clear.
Aguaria Cityscapes
While you may never have met an Aguaria, there tens of sprawling cities hidden deep in the bottom of lakes, oceans or even small ponds if your lucky. Though when walking through a big land city, they often receive a questioning glare or disbelieving gasp. Due to their wet nature, they can be known to make a right mess of peoples floors or belongings, so many have adapted to be able to freeze parts of their bodies for short periods of time in order to hold objects like paper without melting them, or walk on floors without leaving a puddle. Aguaria in other water cities that are not their own, are always welcomed with great enthusiasm and open arms; though they may be less inclined to allow outsiders that are not of their species into their sacred resting places.
Those living on the frontier, though, have a much harder time. People there tend to be less accepting of differences. Sometimes a cold shoulder and a suspicious glare are the best aguaria can hope for; in more backward places, they face ostracism and even violence from people who mistake them for a water genasi who themself sure I’ve criticism. But their positivity never wavers, they just move on to new lands.
Though some Aguaria do enter land for a more vast and exciting life, it is only ever in solitude, and they would be very lucky to ever meet another Aguaria above land. They do however have a good nack for always knowing where the closest cities of their kind is, just based on their chats with the water.
Almost all have some experience aboard or around sea vessels. They make excellent mariners and fishers. Desport being alone, they will try to make friends with anyone or anything and have been known to befriend objects, or even allow aquatic creatures to live inside of them; the wide shores are their natural homes. They go where they want, do what they want while always following the law where possible, and will always keep a promise.
AGUARIA BACKGROUNDS
Each aguaria subrace has its own temperament, which might make some backgrounds more suitable than others.
Fresh water aguaria tend to be the kindest and most well nurturing, always more inclined to help or give than to take or harm. They are the most common sub race to come above ground, and like to indulge themselves in all kinds of history, magic and arts. They may learn to fight or use of weaponry if necessary or they have had life changing experiences in the past.
Salt-water Aguaria are more withdrawn, and are connection to the city of their birth. If travelling above land, they lean towards the use of weaponary in combat, using their connection to the water to distract and blend into their surrounding. Though they are still kind and trusting, they won’t think twice about pulling a sword on you, If you provoke them. They do travel, but unlike the freshwater’s they may spend longer in a certain area, learning deeply about its history and culture, documenting every little detail before moving onto another city, less fussed about rural, forest or mountainous areas.
Abyssal Aguaria derive from the deep seas, where there is not so much as a lick of light, and the pressure is so strong it could crush bone. These people have developed a stronger body, but while on land resemble that of a melted ice cream (or a blob fish), with dropped features and a lower centre of gravity. Their watered colours are more muted and grey, helping them blend into the darkness on both land and sea. Their bioluminescence glows with an alien green, and anyone lucky enough to hear their voice will be reminded of the sirens of old. This race is the rarest of all to surface, as the rise to land takes a large physical and mental toll on the Aguaria, only 4 have been documented through history.
